thank God for my auto club. Those suckers loose money on me every year.
So I asked my wife what happened. She says it was running fine, then just before parking it it stalled a few times. She parked it for about 6 hours, came back and it did it again. So she had it towed home.
It shows up in my driveway on a flatbed. I jump in it, it starts immediately revs up around 1500 but then rather than settling down to 800 it settles down to 0. I restart it, same thing. I then restart it and use accelerator to keep revs up. It seems fine. I suspect that the IAB has gone on strike. I drove it to work tonight, about 15 miles, no problems other than it won't idle. When I got to work I ran the EEC check (KOEO), I get the 111 twice (that's good, right?) then the single seperator flash, then a 176 (HEGO sensor system lean) followed by a 542 (fuel pump secondary circuit fail). These two codes are repeated once.
My history with this car is brief, bought last month, did the 60K front half due to leaky wp. It has stumbled under throttle since I got it, so last week I did new plugs/wires, replaced front bank well seals (didn't have time to do the rears yet). Cleaned the IAB also last week. This seemed to help the wandering idle at the time. Drove out to cape cod over the weekend, no troubles other than a temp gauge that wanders from A to O. I am gonna do a thermostat this week.
That's about it. Also did the rod bearings a few weeks ago, but, don't think that could be related other than the fact that I have a slight leak where the manifold meets the y pipe on the rear bank because I busted off a manifold stud and when I drilled it out and retapped it, it's kinda sloppy and I can't torque the new stud sufficiently. I plan on fixing that too this week.
Well, gurus, what say ye? I figure I gotta replace the IAB tomorrow for starters. Anything else to check? Could the exhaust manifold leak trick the 02 sensor into thinking it's running lean? Or did I just do a crappy job sealing the intake when I put it back on? I used the black rtv as is recommended, but, I didn't replace the gasket, the old one seems fine and I did scrape the excess old rtv off it. How bout the fuel pump code. It seems OK (pump cycles on/off within a few seconds after key is turned to run). I didn't do a pressure check yet. I did replace the fuel filter last week, btw. One other thing, the wife did fillup with a tank full of premium not long before the symptoms occured.
