I have a new noise coming from my engine. It just showed up Saturday (3/20) On video it sounds a bit like an old tractor. A slap rub chatter sound. I have asked two of my mechanic buddies to listen to the sound on video and they can't pinpoint it. but the list of options we have come up with is: timing chain slap due to worn tensioner, pulley going bad, rod bearing, piston pin, lifter on one of the valves, or a popped spark plug. the noise is coming from the front of the engine on the rear bank. right around the front piston on that side. that's where the noise is the loudest. any thoughts? i can upload the video and email it to anyone who wants to take a crack at it. the car is 100 miles from where i live so my buddies couldn't look at it directly and i need to try to narrow down the possibilities before i go and work on it. any and all help is much appreciated.

Thank you so very much.

Ive had a spun cam before. This doesnt sound like it. but when i do my tear down to look at it ill check for sprocket movement. on my old motor that had the sprocket sprung it was on the same cam that this noise is comming from. the engine has been welded already.

if the motor has already been welded then it shouldn't be the sprocket unless the weld job was ******. if the noise sounds like a diesel motor rattling my conclusion is that the sprocket is wobbling. if that isn't the case then my next guess would be a chain tensioner.

how hard is it to replace the tensioner? what all does it entail? Ill check that pulley, if that's the case how hard is it to replace?

plan to do that this weekend. I was hoping to maybe narrow it down before i drove the 100 miles to the car. but my top guesses seem to be something on the belt, but it sounds deeper than that so next best option is popped spark plug but that one isnt being given much hope so next is a tensioner for the timing belt. then maybe a shim. but i guess i cant know for certain till i dig into it. hopefully, i can get it all solved this weekend. what do new tensioners run?

My 2 cents - Sounds like a blown head gasket between adjacent cylinders. Do a leak down test on the cylinder you suspect...and listen for air escaping...

how do i do a leak down test? i dont have any tools for that. ive got the motor tore down to the cams, workin on the possiblity that its the timing chain tensioner, workin to remove the front engine cover. the cams are good, sprockets good, welds are good, everything looks good so far. any tips will be greatly appreciated.
