Where are the mods? This needs to be posted in the Gen 3 section.

I don't know about the Gen 3's, but that sounds like a Gen 3 SHO about to die by the faulty cam/cam sprokets or whatever it is that goes bad. Don't drive it until the Gen 3 guys explain or it could leave you stranded and cost more to fix then what you can get the car sold for running with out the problem. Go to www.V8SHO.com and read about your car and welcome to the forum. wink

Oh and that dealer thing probaly explains it. They don't want nothing to do with it and know what it is.

Most people have had one of three things make that noise:
1) Alternator - bearings or cracked housing
2) Transmission - Primary pump or sprag cage
3) Power steering pump

I have listed them in freaquency that I have heard them in. In my case I had #2. The sprags to be precise. I have also heard that the water pump has failed on a few cars but i do not recall it making noise when it does.
Of course two Gen 3's make that noise all the time now but we like it that way boink

See, now you know I don't know about the Gen. 3. :D Good Luck in solving your problem though. wink You might want to go ahead and look into getting your cams welded or pinned just to be on the safe side.

Could it also be a sign of the cam issue though since it varies with the revs?

Sorry to be off topic, but I love the pics in your sig ArkanSHO. Have you seen what it can do at the track (1/4 mi.) yet?

Tranny would be my guess. It will make the noise for quite a while before failing bedause of it.

Actually, that exactly describes the characteristics of my alternator before I replaced it. It was still putting out good charge for some time after it started the sound, but then began to get low voltage output on my voltmeter. Replaced it and whine gone.

The cams generaly don't make a whining but rather a clicking/ticking like a diesel engine at an idle.
1/4 mile passes on my car were disappointing in the 12's and below 110 since even with LSD I could not get the cheapass tires to hook-up. The new tires and 3000 stall should slide me into the 11's and over 110 now.
Funny thing is I have 1966 Galaxie 7 Liter in the yard with a 428 ci motor the SHO was outrunning stock with less half the cubic inches and power everything. boink

I would like to thank those who responded to my post re the whining noise in my 99 sho. Dont think and sincerely hope it is not faulty cam sprockets as I listened to posted clips of those sounds and mine doesnt sound anything like that diesel chatter. Mine is more like the sound you would get in old cars with am radios where you could hear a medium/high pitched whine in the radio as the rpms increased. That leaves the alternater, tranny, and power steering pump suggested by ARKan Sho and I am hoping Steven Newburg's helpful post re his alternator failure making identical noise is on point and will replace alternator in next few days and will post if this fixes it. Thanks all again

Didn't do that at 9psi, but any more boost wouldn't serve me well since I couldn't get her to hook up.

You might be able to eliminate the PS pump as a source of the noise if it doesn't whine when you're stationary, moving the steering wheel lock to lock. If it does whine, check the hoses and clamps to the PS pump.

whining noise turned out to be failed tranny converter/should not have happened at 60,000 miles/ in any event that fixed the noise and any vacation plans I had.
