yes, it would take R-12, but it in increasingly pricey. I would do a retrofit to R134a, it will be cheaper in the long run.

R12 from the factory.

Freon is available from sellers on e-bay for around 22-25 bucks a pound, less than half the retail price. You do need a license, which can be obtained for 15 bucks by taking an open book test online.

If you can avoid converting, do so. It's tough to get an R-134 conversion to perform as well as the original R12 system did.

You can recharge with what's called R12 Freeze, but I think it is just 134a with a compatible oil.

Anybody else know anthing about R12 Freeze?

To find out what is in the car right now, look at the high pressure fitting near the battery. Is it a threaded fitting or a quick connect type fitting? The former indicates the system is still the original R12. The latter shows that the system has already been retrofitted to R134a. The charging hoses and fittings for one refrigerant won't connect to a system with the other.

If by R12 freeze ... you are referring to "Freeze 12" manufactured by johnson controls its not not 134a by any stretch. It is an alltogether completely different compound and is high in butane content. This is why it has not been approved for use in automobiles by any governing body, any auto manufacturer, or any aftermarket manufacturer of a/c compressors. It does replace R12 and you can use it without retrofitting to a different type of oil, but for the money and time involved... goto walmart and get the 30 dollars worth of interdynamics retrofit kit to 134a and just change it once and for all, they even have picture instructions.
