Crank Position Sensor. it uses an electromagentic pulse to detect where the crank is. its purpose is for timing.

Oh here we go again... :)

CPS is often used for BOTH Crank Position Sensor & Cam Position Sensor.

Actually, there's CID, which is the Camshaft / Cylinder Identification Sensor, aka CMP.

Then there's the CKP, Crankshaft Position Sensor, aka CPS. Oh, and there are other terms for each too, like PIP Sensor... wink

The CMP sensor was also once refered to as the CPS. Actually Ford used to use CPS for both the CMP and CKP sensors. New and updated terminology (as previously posted) is CMP is the Camshaft Position Sensor, and CKP is the Crankshaft Position Sensor.
