Ok, so the tranny swap this weekend went amazingly. With the excption of having to replace the power steering return line from the cooler nothing went wrong. No. My rod shifter did fall to the ground a couple times and this is where my concern is. Did I mess it up some how because shifting into first third and fifth are amazing. I've never felt an sho shift so smooth.. but trying to get out of second fouth or reverse it feels like its getting caught on something. Thers no grinding or weird noises and it fully locks into geat. I first thought I wasgetting caught on the pads under the boot but we removed them and no difference.. thoughts gurus?

So, if you unbolt the rod from the transmission boss, are you able to slide it front to back a few inches freely? The box part of the shifter should remain stationary and the metal rod part should slide freely on those pads I think you mentioned.

Also wouldnt hurt to double check where exactly your subframe is situated. There should be some 1/2" holes that line up.

Im going tomorrow to have the car aligned again. Ill ask them to center the sub frame as well.. When We installed it the front ones lined up well.. I guess I can tripple check everything in the morning..

The reason my asking is because if it was shifting poorly in ALL gears i would assume there was something wrong with the position of the shifter.. Should I double check the alignment of the sub frame and shifter before i take it in for an alignment?

Tbh, everything LOOKS correct.. if it is the subframe then ill have to use a 1/2" extension to stick in there... but by just looking I see nothing wrong.

Disconnect the rod shifter from the tranny and see if you can slide the shift knuckle (dont know the actual word for it) on the transmission where the rod attaches to it. Can you move it around fairly easily?

If the subframe was off enough to cause 2, 4 and reverse to hang up, it would affect the other gears at least slightly. After all, all the gears are being shifted by the same rod. My guess is something is catching inside the case. The tranny was sitting in your garage for like 2 years so there's a chance something got gummed up ersumshit.

one year.. and in the back gears the rod is being pushed forward extending it all the way.. pulling it back would be easier..away from the subframe

Well if you already checked the front on both sides and they lined up, I think you can check subframe alignment off the list.

I'd take the shifter apart and look at the ball-and-socket junction between the actual shifter and the linkage rod (inside the black box). I have broken the socket portion off of the linkage rod before (along with just about every other part of the shifter...). It's possible that yours has a stress crack and is slowly separating. It's at least worth a look. You don't want it to break while you're on the road.
