Can someone please tell me what this ugly thing is:
ugly thing (sorry, i don't know how to post pics)
and what purpose does it serve? I would have done some searching, but without knowing the proper name it would have been nearly impossible.

Its one of those backup things I believe. Just like your battery has the big ground going directly to the starter and then it has the little ground going to the fender. I am sure the little ground helps, but if you took it off, I doubt the car would stop running/things would mess up.
