I dropped a wrench as I was trying to tighten up a bracket. As I was looking for the wrench with a magnet, I came across this. Is this part of the steering rack? Is it something that has come disconnected? Or is it a tool of some sort that someone dropped lol. The pic is looking directly down over where the bracket to the intake and ground strap should go. That metal rod will move and wiggle with the magnet, but it looks attached to something.

Anyone? It definitely looks like a part of the rack and pinion. A metal rod that runs from one boot to the other. The other end, which is directly below the brake master cylinder, is the same way. The fact that it is easily moved, or out of the little cap, does that mean it's on its way out? As in, completely shot?

If it runs from one bellows to the other, it is probably the balance tube that equalizes pressure between the bellows as the rack is turned. It's been a while and I don't recall if the tube is metal or plastic. If metal, it does look as though something is making contact with yours to make it that bright.

That makes sense. The fact that it's loose/popped out of each end, what does that indicate? Will it operate ok popped out?is it headed for the trash bin?

Ok thank you. Would it make noise as I turn the wheel? I've had almost all suspension components replaced, and I still have this awful noise as I turn the steering wheel. Mostly only on cold mornings. I've read that the top of the strut assembly has been known to rub against the top of the strut tower, causing this noise. I've ordered some strut spacers to see if they help. But now I wonder if it's the steering rack?
