What is this wire? (also come here if you made custom batt. cables)

My positive terminal has the one thick wire coming from the post, and also one small one. It goes to the wiring harness just below the a/c check valve.
I have some pictures of the wire which I will post if needed.

Also, for those of you that made your own cables with welding cable, would 1/0 or 2/0 be better for the positive cable? And how many feet do I need to buy to do the positive and negative cable?

I'll start by asking what year and trannie. It's too cold to go out to the garage and look at mine. A good guess may be it goes to the alternator?

I made a set of cables for my '89 about a month ago. I modified mine slighty though.

Negative side, I routed it down along side of the radiator and across to the same bolt that it connects to on the front side of the motor. There was a smaller wire that simply grounded next to the battery, which I took a 10 gauge wire, put a ring terminal and crimped it along with the other wire there and simply cleaned the corrosion off and rebolted it in.

Positive side, I didn't like the way the cable was ran in front of the motor, so I took off the plastic guard with the stickers and routed it in the trench under it along the fender and to the solenoid. I took the smaller wire, lengthened it with some 10 gauge wire and made the connection at the terminal. I know if that wire isn't connected, you can't pull codes, the fuel pump doesn't work... etc. :) Trust me on that one! lol

I used 4 gauge wire for my application since that is what was on it to begin with and I got it from work for zero dollas! :) I did it when the temps were right at the zero marker with good winds.. took me about an hour running in and outside. You could probably do it in a decently warm garage in 20 minutes or so.
