what is it?

I had seen a picture of someone's intake manifold on the main page one time, the outer area of it was painted black and the snakes going across were polished, and I noticed towards the back and slightly above it a bar going across. It was attached to the strut tower, I think its called, and I assume the other side connected to the other tower. What is it and what does it do? I posted in the performance mod section because my SHO doesn't have this so I figured it must be aftermarket or custom made.

It is called a strut tower brace.
