I read all I could and believe welding the pins increases the life of the differential. What is the down side- does it effect performance as a daily driver or what? I'm going to have the engine and drivetrain out on my 93 mtx and wonder if I should consider welding the pins. I plan on making the SHO faster, but mainly with Bolt ons and exhaust mods. NO nitrus etc.

If I was in your shoes I would have it welded. Even with the stock power you can easily blow the diff apart on any hard launches or tire slippage. From what i have searched and read i haven't seen any downsides on it. The most could happen is if its not welded evenly it could be off balance a tad. But you pry wouldn't notice it. Make sure you search before posting up there are tons of threads on the diff.

it only adds a few ounces, doesnt cost alot, and requires no other mods

also wont let your diff pin put fist sized holes in your trans ! I have a bell housing here that i can wear like a bracelet, and theres a second hole across the top where the pin finally jammed off the clutch and made an attack on the throttle body.

so thats a shot case, a shot diff, a 1/2 shot clutch, plus a bunch of damage to misc gears and such, because bits and pieces of the explosion flew upwards INSIDE the transmission also

But then again... that tranny was from a rather special car, lol

It depends on what kind of differential service you are getting, as to the increased life of the differential. I would also stay away from anyone offering the service who has not been mentioned on this forum, as you can see a picture of a differential that was poorly serviced in the link below. No effects on performance.

Here's a good thread on the services, with all kinds of pictures posted just recently:

IMHO the best mod on my car after the y-pipe has been the quaife diff. The Quaife completely transformed the way the car handles. Instead of increasing understeer when power is applied, I get less understeer. I would weld the diff as an interim measure and save for a Quaife if you plan to keep the car a long time.

As long as it's done by a reputable vendor or member who's done them before, you should be fine. That thread that's linked above, good info in there!
