I was under the impression that it's the shock of suddenly gaining or loosing traction that shears the roll pins, not excessive spinning. Think about what would happen if you were to drive on a very low friction surface. You'd be spinning all the time, but there wouldn't be much of any load on the roll pins to cause them to sheer.

"It's not the snow that'll blow the diff, it's that unexpected patch of dry pavement."

^ I read something to that effect on here years ago, and it stuck with me (obviously).

You're probably right about that, actually.

I thought it was the shock load and excessive spinning flings all the oil away from the diff .
I think it is a combinatin of things.

For one, any rotation of the differential flings the oil out of it. When negotiating a corner, the spider gear rotation isn't especially significant, so no harm. When you're lighting up a tire, spider gear rotation is substantial, however there is no longer any oil in the diff to provide protection, which results in heat, and eventually the spider gear will grab the diff pin and rotate it, breaking the spring pin.

Once that spring pin is broken, it's only a matter of time before the diff pin lets go and punches a hole in your transmission case.

That's why I like James' design. It's not meant to prevent a failure, it's meant to contain the fallout when it happens, so you don't ruin the case.

That is a nice design. I saw a pic a while back, but it wasn't that one. That's most definitely win.

Post those pics when you get a chance, i'm interested.

The only thing with the ring is - how do you know if it does fail?

You would have a loud tapping noise at idle which I had. The noise would go away if the clutch was pressed in. It would also go away if the shifter is pressed towards any forward gear with the clutch out. I thought I had neutral rollover, but two of my diff pins were loose one more than the other.

who made that awesome ring weld job and how much to do another?

The person above you and I think it's 150. It's worth every penny. The tow would cost more if you broke down, or you could be an ass hat and keep driving like I did years ago.
