I recently replaced my water pump due to a leak. I took the car for a 45 min drive and it drove fine, then the next day the leak was back and the CPS was getting wet and making the car die at low rpm.

While replacing the water pump I did not replace any other gaskets, except the impeller housing to pump gasket. I noticed that there was no gasket at all where the pump sits against the block, I could feel a water passage back there. (I only replaced the impeller housing, did not remove the entire pump or the timing belt)

I now have the "water pump mounting set" with 3 O-Rings, the water pump gasket, and then one smaller gasket with 2 bolt holes and 1 water passage hole. Is this the missing gasket? Has anyone else dealt with this?

Also, should I use some sealant around the gasket mounting surfaces or just make the everything is spotless and use gaskets only.

Yes, there are o-rings that need to be replaced. One goes on the block, the others go on the crossover tube. **** THESE VERY WELL!!!!

The small gasket is the coolant pick-up tube that the lower radiator hose connects to.
There are two allen head bolts that hold the tube to the water pump housing.

a little gasket sealer never hurts but be careful, too much and it can clog your cooling system. thin even layer that will spread perfect. no pressure though haha. goodluck

There is little worse than having to redo the WP job on a SHO. You will need to remove the entire WP, including the housing. The gasket with two bolt holes and one big hole goes on the housing inlet pipe. The skinny O-ring goes on the back of the housing, between it and the block. Use a small amount of RTV applied into the groove with a toothpick to hold the O-ring in place during installation. Clean the block surface well before installing the WP. A large O-ring goes at each end of the crossover tube. One end is readily visible when you remove the WP housing. It may take some twisting and yanking to pull the other end loose, but the whole tube does come out. Lubricate the new crossover tube O-rings with antifreeze only.

Borrow a pressure tester from Autozone or Advance to verify the system is tight before going to the trouble of putting all the surrounding pieces back on.

I recommend removing the timing belt for access; it's hard to do it right otherwise. In fact, I spend the extra 15 minutes to remove the timing pulleys and backing plate too because it makes access so much better for this job.

No question about it...there are no "shortcuts". Let this be a lesson to anyone that needs a new water pump...

Half the time the pump is fine...it's the housing to block gasket that leaks. But soo many people say...
"hey...look, I can do this without taking it all apart."

NOT

The good news is...the gaskets are cheap and all you lost was time.

That's another reason I go crazy with new hoses/gaskets under the hood. It's just much harder to work on these than a " insert almost any car here".

WP thread -- photos of rear gasket etc.

followed this thread the other day, and had access to a few photos of this during my 60K on the 95MTX. However, website problems intervened.

http://http://johndallara.home.mindspring.com/sho/id15.html

Fixed the site, got the photos back up. They show the back of the WP housing where the o-rings go and also the application of a little RTV on to the block where the WP fits on.

Hope this is not too redundant or too late to be useful.

Thanks for all of the help. I got it back together this weekend and everything seems to be going fine. It ended up being the o-ring where the pump meets the block.
