Your statement about your 13 and 16 SHOs doing weird things makes me wonder if I'm being too picky ...
LOL
I noticed when I first got my 2013, that if I get in the car, start it, and try to drive away, it surged pretty bad - to the point where it would get the traction control going. So I got used to remote starting it from as far away as I could, walking to it, and then driving away. No surge. So I got used to it.
2016? SAME THING.
(Shoulder shrug emoticon goes here)
Both SHO's are leases. The 2013, I did the bare minimum service to it, and only complained about the (somewhat?) well-known catastrophic loss of power when I pulled out in traffic. They updated the calibration, and it never did it after that. Besides the axle-shaft recall, where my axle was actually coming out of the transaxle, the fuel delivery module recall, and the rear license plate bulb socket recall, all done at once, those two times were the only times I had it in for service. Overall the car just performed great, the little light-throttle weirdnesses I just dealt with - by making sure I didn't use light-throttle

This 2016, I'm about 75/25 on buying it after the lease is up. So I'm going to monitor and warranty every little thing I can before the lease is up in 3 years.
I'm already devising a way to eliminate that freakin' annoying double-honk when you leave the engine running and get out and close the door (or trunk). Without making any major changes, like uploading a new software package using IDS that this guy came up with: www.fordPImods.com And easily removed if I do return it at the end of the lease.
Although, that AWD monitoring display shown on that web site would be pretty cool to have.
Back to your issue though, really, try 93 octane just to have a complete base-line. Little things, even a dirty air cleaner can do all sorts of weird things.
ALSO - CLEAN THE MAF sensor! I did this once on my 2013 when I was changing the oil at around 20K miles, and holy cow, that thing was DIRTY. Made a difference in low-throttle driveability

Well said, my friend, well said... and that just sold me on Meth injection haha... oh that sounds kinda illegal (buh-dump-bump tsssss)... haha
