So I got my crank pulley off today, and finally got a look at the CPS. I think it's safe to say that this is the culprit. The waterpump is in good shape, but it looks like the crank seal has been leaking pretty good, enough to get the CPS wet. doh I'm have a new seal ready to go.

Now, how do I line up the cams? I'm mean, I know where they go, but how do I turn them? (The timing belt is off.) I tried turning them using both hands, they seem to turn a little and then go right back, any tricks? shrug

so your trying to re-angle the cams? are the chain tensinors on? and are the cam journals torqued down? have any of the cams been rotated from the original position? tell me a little more about what your trying to do.

stick a screw driver in one of the holes and turn. They have a lot of compression to them so watch out. They will sling at you so be careful.

I used a large hammer, with the crow foot in the cam pulley (be careful not to break or bend anything!)

Like BeatDaSHO said, once you start turning, there's a lot of compression built up and they will "pop" one direction or the other sometimes. Just keep going the direction the motor normally turns until you get it where it needs to be.

What works best for me is a strap wrench... though I have turned them by hand to get the straight. The strap wrench works well here.

If your CPS is wet with oil, I would suspect that the cam seals are leaking. That oil from the front main is unlikely to get up there. Since you have it disassembled this far, it's not too much extra work to replace the two behind the pulleys right now.

Ditto on the strap wrench for turning the cams.

How to turn the cam sprockets? Use some good gloves and a little bit of muscle. :) I've found doing it this way I can just about feel when they are almost in position and can adjust the tension on them before they snap back the other way. Whatever method you use good luck.

The cams have square edges on certain areas. You can use a wrench to turn them. You can also turn them using one of the bolts on the cam sprockets. They shouldn't strip. I don't have a strap wrench, but that should also work. You're gonna need some strength to turn them by hand. Definately wear gloves if trying that method. I've got quite the scar on my hand to verify that they do indeed bite hard. I broke a wp bolt loose and got myself pretty good on that one. I covered it up before looking and chanted, "please no E.R.... please no E.R...." My friend thought it was pretty funny but it definately wasn't funny.

lol ok thanks.

I think I have the cam seals, i'm pretty sure I got them with all my 60k stuff. but I really don't think that's the problem, I checked them out and they look fine, but crankshaft seal didn't look so good.

anyway another question. I took off the waterpump today, what kind of sealand should I use where it connects to the block? would black RTV be ok?

and what is involved in changing the cam seals?
