I have a 94 SHO with an auto tranny. About 20k on a rebuild. I drove it today and it has hard 1-2 and 2-1 shifting sometimes. The cruise control always worked until the trans started acting up. This happened all of a sudden with no warning. Will a TSS or VSS fix this problem?

I don't know much about auto trannys but it doesn't sound too good. Usually the first thing to go when a tranny is on its way out is the OD is lost. You could always try replacing the sensor to see what happens. Is there any warranty on the rebuild?

I cant tell you for sure unless you have a stored code for either, but apparently not all cars will through a code when these sensors fail. I will say that when a VSS fails you will have "confused" shift patterns throughout all the gears. It will start to happen when the motor reaches normal temp. One example is when you go and floor it to pass, it wont want to downshift correctly and will just kind of bog down lingering in O/D, or when coasting down a hill it will stay in say 1st when it feels like it should drop into 2nd, It just feels like the trans constantly cant read how fast the wheels are turning and what gear to be in.
It will also stay in occasionally stay in 1st when stopped and cause the engine to drop to low in rpms and stall. My cruise still functioned when mine failed both times.
When a TSS fails it will result in a hard shift from 1-2. It will also start to happen once the temp reaches normal. Even when accelerating smoothly, when it shifts from 1-2 it will slam into 2nd with a with a thud that unmistakably sounds bad for the trans, if you're going semi-heavy on the pedal the shift will be so hard that the tires will chirp and you'll feel a "bone jarring" thud in the trans. If you try to feather it into gear it will feel like its slipping then finally find the shift. Downshifts from 2-1 will be hard too but not as pronounced with the "slamming" when accelerating.
Let me warn you these can also be symptoms of broken or warn out internals in the transmission, there was a post awhile back that sounded exactly like a bad TSS, after it was replaced they still had the hard shifts, it turned out they had broken a spring in the trans and needed to rebuild.
Hope this helps and good luck.
