SHO noises

OK, so I just replaced the flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing on my 95 SHO with 111k on it. I recently started hearing a sound coming from the front driverside corner of the enginebay, most likely the transmission, that sounds like the balls of a bearing spinning around or a failing bearing. The sound is most noticable when I am driving a low speeds in 1st and 2nd gear, however it stops completly when I push in the clutch pedal, leading me to believe it is something with the transmission of clutch assembly. I would describe it as a "grrrrrrr" or grinding sound. I think it may be one of the input shaft bearings. If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it. My plan for now is to drop the subframe and take out the transmission to have a look at it.

I installed a Valeo clutch 9.75 and a stock throw out bearing from Ford. It seems driveable, but I don't know when this bearing is going to go. Has anyone done work on the bearing in the transmission?

I just replaced my clutch, and now it seems one of the bearing in my transaxle or transmission is failing. I was wondering if anyone has rebuit a SHO transmission or replaced the bearings. I did not really have any trouble replacing the clutch (about 10 hours including drilling out 4 manifold studs and suspension bolts i broke), do you think that the transmission rebuilt and bearing replacement is a much harder job than the clutch job?

What leads you to believe its a bearing in the transaxle?

You have to take the transmission out, then rebuild it, then put it back in. So based on that I would say that rebuilding a transaxle is more work than a clutch.

Ditto what Michael said, why do you believe that a bearing has failed? Give us some details so we can help you. Also, double check the fluid level before you go removing anything.

Can you feel the grinding or just hear it? Does it make this sound when you're not moving? (sitting at idle with the car in neutral and your foot off the clutch pedal.)

As soon as I heard the noise i double checked the fluid level in the transmission and jacked up the car to see if the noise could be coming from the cv joints. The fluid level was fine, as were the cv joints. I DID put in the safety pin that holds the TOB onto the fork, but my fears are that it may have fallen off somehow. Today I noticed that if I put the car in neutral and have the clutch up the grinding is much louder, especially when i rev it to 2000 rpms. It is the same noise as when the car is in gear and driving with the clutch up, but with no road noises to distort it. It is coming from the transmission, but it does not affect driving at all except for the noise. I am not driving the car, but today I drove to to a shop in Worcester mass where I met a guy who posts on these forums. I was going to ask for his opinion on the noise. please let me know if there is any other information i can get you guys to help me out

Lets get back to the basics, did you adjust the clutch? If the car is jacked up with both wheels off the ground, do they turn freely? Any noise or "spots" as you turn them? When idling in neutral, reach down and pull/push the release arm. You won'tt be able to move it much, but does the sound change?

That small nylon pin that is installed in the TOB to clutch fork does NOTHING once the trans is mounted to the motor. The only thing it does is hold the TOB in place until everything is lined up. The clutch cable self adjuster and PP do the rest :thumb:

Back to the problem at hand...

Could you possibly get an audio clip of the noise?

I could not move the release arm much at all, but there was definatly some abnormal vibration coming from it. The clutch and p.p. lined up with the flywheel flush when they were installed so I don't see how the p.p. would be giving me trouble unless it was defective in some way. As for the sound clip I will try to get a good one, but it will be hard to hear the sound over the engine running, as is I can only here this grinding sound with the windows and moonroof all closed up, otherwise it is drowned out. I have a feeling it it the throw out bearing, but my father thinks it is the input shaft bearing. Does anyone know the signs of a bad input shaft bearing?

Seems pretty simple in my mind to diagnose the trans. Was it making the noise BEFORE the clutch job?

If not, its probably not the tranny.

mishman, did you ever figure out this problem. I have the same thing under the same condition. Noise minimizes when clutch is pushed.
