how many miles on the car?

THe ATX is weak and one of the first indicators that it is going bad is the loss of the overdrive. Are there any other symptoms? I'm not saying your tranny is going out, as you said it is going in and out of overdrive. Run the codes and see if the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is causing your problems.

Well the car has a 121 thousand miles on it, and the tranny does shift hard sometimes when it comes out of 1st gear

The two of you need to pull your codes, at that mileage and with your not so specific descriptions it could be tranny rebuild time or more optimisticly sensor related and can be repaired DIY. The codes you will be looking for will be tranny related. I had to replace both my Variable Speed Sensor (VSS) and Transmission or Turbine Speed Sensor TSS at around 100,000 miles on my 93 ATX and both times they threw a code when they acted up similarily to your descriptions. The TSS created hard shifts from 1st to 2nd and the VSS caused my trans to seem stuck in gears and not shift correctly according to conditions. If left unchecked they will cause irreversable damage to your transmission. These symptoms can also be signs of more complicated internal transmission failure and will require a re-build. You will need the stored codes to diagnose this

Its located a little above where the driveshaft goes into the transmission on the drivers side. Its got one small Hex screw holding it in and has 2 wires going into it, mine was a little covered in road gunk so it took a second to locate. To replace it remove the wheel and go through the wheel well, once you remove the screw you'll have to gently pry it out. Dont lose the screw because I dont think the new TSS comes with one. It was 24.29 at the dealer 2 years ago, I couldnt locate an aftermarket one. Just make sure they give you the TSS and not the VSS. The Ford TSS part # is F1DZ*7M101*A.
BTW I had a code stored specifically indicating a problem with the TSS, along with the hard shifts.
Hope This helps

I had no 648 code when either sensor failed ...sorry, I dont know very much about the internal workings of our transmissions, however you may want to do a search on "648" before you start replacing components that may not be defective, especially since that VSS is **** to replace on a ATX. As I said when those sensors failed on my 93 I had similar problems, but more importantly I had the specific corresponding trouble codes.

2 other things to consider, the O/D button has a wire that can be cut in the console and also the spring clip on the O/D servo can come off. I had both, lucky me.

Without a lift, a torch for the exhaust studs, very small hands, and the patience of a Saint its gonna be a Mother. Both times I had to replace mine I found an unsuspecting shop tech to whom I supplied the sensor and gladly paid the book time to give him the priveledge to earn the headache and replace it. You wont get a warranty on the part except from whoever you get it from so make sure its really what you need. I tried to DIY it but it is really tough, just to get the old one out is ****, I couldnt even imagine trying to get the new one in....They really earn there pay for this job. Good luck either way, Like I said before... make sure thats the problem first, if its bad you'll have a code for it, it really isnt a part that you want to blindly "throw at your car"
