I've been thinking about doing the same. The problem with the Jeg's gauge is that it only goes to 280 degrees and on the track the temp will likely go a bit higher. And it's a mechanical gauge from the looks of it. I think you want an electric gauge.

I was thinking of tapping into the tranny cooler line.

In my crude photobucket edited photo you can just barely see the plug. Put teflon tape around the sensor that comes with the autometer (etc.) gauge and thread it into this. This is a test port for the transmission. I've used it for almost two years now.

Indeed. Be sure to use the front plug. This is the EPC test port.

No it does not to be tapped or threaded and yes that is on top of the transmission case. Just remove the plug, and install your temp sender there. It is the same size 1/4" pipe thread or something similar.

It is a test port to test the EPC pressure. There is another there too that is full pump pressure which can approach 300 lbs.

Just like this.

Tranny temp sender v8

Be sure to ground the gage at the same point. I just used a large ring terminal and a 1/8" pipe thread locking nut (found in an assortment of lamp repair parts bubble pack) and grounded the gage right to the sensor. Don't use thread sealant tape but a paste type. Also this is a tapered thread so no need to tighten all the way.
