Ok, so here is what is happening intermittently. When the tranny is preparing to shift to 3rd gear it seems instead to downshift and rev really high and bounce off the rev limiter around 4K RPM. I checked the fluid level and it is fine. The thing is it really doesn't feel like other auto tranny issues I have experienced in the past with slipping and such. Just seems to be having an issue shifting properly. Anyone have any input on this? :sosad:

Thanks in advance,

Nate

Hope it isn't something in the valve body but if it is you will probably find out soon enough.....

Sounds like it may be disengaging the lower gear (allowing engine to rev free) and too slow on the engagement of the new gear. Most likely causes would seem to be a worn clutch that doesn't want to engage or a sticking valve. The good news on the valve is that you can r/r the valve body w/o taking out the whole trans, the bad news is that in my experience you are 10x more likely that it is a worn/slipping clutch, which means the trans will need to be rebuilt.

Car has 118,000 miles on it. Is it normal for that kind of wear for a clutch at that mileage?

Took it to a local tranny shop yesterday. They couldn't find anything wrong with the transmission but they noticed that somehow one of my tires that had been replaced by a local tire shop was a slightly different size which I hadn't noticed before. ....yay -_- They said that this could easily be causing the issue I am having so I am gonna put a new set of tires on it this week and let you all know what the result is.

4 new tires later and the issue is gone.

Can you explain to us how changing the tires caused the engine to stop bouncing off the rev limiter between shifts???

the way it was explained to me by the transmission shop was that the wheel sensors were being thrown off by two different tire sizes and causing the computer to get whacked out. I talked it over with another mechanic friend and he had the same theory cause a similar thing happened to a friend of his but not on an SHO. Another factor making it worse is that I had picked up a few nails in my neighborhood from a recent neighborhood-wide re-roofing and at the time it was having most of the issues I had put the factory spare on for a few days so it actually had 3 different sized tires on it during all this. I didn't know the one was the wrong size so I never thought about the spare causing something to happen like that. Anyhow, it drives like a new car now outside of a few minor misses here and there which I assume are from a coil going bad. :p

I've had different sized tires on my '97 before. It would turn off the ABS after ~5 miles but that is it.
