I want to buy a sailboat for me and the Granddaughter...
A tow bar is currently installed.
what are the towing limits on a 1989 SHO
I live on the Mississippi river so the ramps are steep!
any info appreciated.

not much, people usually don't recommend towing anything with them, although Id say the 5 speed will take more then the auto as that will burn up fast. IIRC it's 1000lbs but just check your owners manual I believe it says in there:)

For a number of years I regularly towed a powerboat with a total towed weight of 1,900 lbs. The SHO handled it very nicely.

I bought a 91 from an auction that had a tow bar and ball on it. I never actually towed anything but I did use it one to pull down a concrete pylon in a parking lot once.

Id keep the tongue weight below 300 lbs give or take. Id keep the total capacity less then 2000 lbs... And 1 ton is really pushing it with stock brakes. But then again, my first SHO (95 ATX) spent its first 60k as a company car. And I know for a fact that a majority of that time, there was an air compressor being towed behind it. Those are not light by any means. But any more than 1 ton and you risk folding your car in half during a emergency stop. Keep the rpms up and you should be okay with a small boat. The power is there... Just not the strength thanks to the unibody frame.

Probably. I'd be willing to bet that the realistic towing limits would go up significantly with subframe connectors installed. Then you wouldn't have to worry about the weakness of the unibody, and tranny strength becomes the only concern.

Here is an old picture of my '94 working to haul shrubs and hedge clippings to the city dump.

SHO NUT used to tow a U Haul trailer to the conventions and back. IT was loaded with a big tool box, and an extra tranny, cv shafts, etc...:p

I thought that's why they put a trunk on it...? for all the spare parts and tools?
