An excerpt from my Clutch Procedure:

Flywheel and Clutch Installation

  1. Install the new or resurfaced flywheel. Align the index marks on the flywheel and ******. Use blue Loctite on the bolt threads and tighten with 17mm socket in a cross pattern in (at least) two torque stages (1st: 29-39 lb-ft, 2nd: 51-58 lb-ft).

CAUTION: During the conduct of this procedure, the car, engine and transaxle are at times suspended above the worker and could cause severe injury or death if they should fall. Ensure the lifts, jack stands and supports are secure and appropriate for the application.

CAUTION: Safety glasses should be worn at all times when working under the car or around rotating or striking equipment.

  2. Clean the machined pressure plate surface and the mating flywheel surface with solvent.

  3. Install the disc and pressure plate on the flywheel’s alignment dowels. Ensure the disc is facing the correct direction. The surface with the notation, "FW SIDE” or “FLYWHEEL SIDE," should face the flywheel. The Motorcraft Clutch Arbor/Aligner Tool T81P-7550-A may be used to center the clutch disc. Alternately, the disc may be centered by hand and line of sight.

  4. Install the six, new 10mm pressure plate bolts using blue Loctite and tighten them just enough to hold the pressure plate and clutch disc in place, but still allow the disc to be moved for centering. If the alignment tool is not available, center the disc by hand through the three accessible locations on the pressure plate. Verify the disc is centered by looking through the center bore of the disc into the crankshaft’s bore. Tighten the six pressure plate bolts in a cross pattern in (at least) two torque stages (1st: 20 lb-ft, 2nd: 24 lb-ft or per the instructions provided with the clutch). Remove the alignment tool if used.

  5. Clean the tips of the pressure plate fingers with solvent where the release bearing will contact it.
