My brother has a 89 SHO and he just had the water pump, cps, and timing belt changed. Now it seems like the car is missing is it possible that the car timing could be off and if so can that be adjust similar to older cars with a timing light. I told my brother that I didn't think so that he might want to take it back where he had the work done cause the timing must be off when they put the belt back on. Any imput would be appreciated.

Thanks

You can use that timing light to check the timing, you just can't adjust it.

Unplug the SPOUT connector, hook up the timing light and look for 10 degrees BTDC. If it's off by more than a small amount, the belt was installed wrong or the CPS wasn't properly installed.

The timing light can only check the ignition or spark timing. The timing belt affects only the camshaft timing with respect to the crankshaft and position of the pistons. They are not interdependent - changing one will not affect the other.

The ignition timing is entirely governed by the electronic engine control (EEC) computer and is not adjustable except through the use of an EPROM computer chip. The camshaft timing is entirely governed by the orientation of the camshafts and crankshaft during the installation of the timing belt.

To change the camshaft timing, you must remove the belt, reorient the cam and crank pulleys and reinstall the belt. This should be done per the Ford (or other service manual) installation procedure to ensure it is correct. It sounds as if the shop that installed the belt didn't follow a procedure.

So if it is off, that will cause the car to fire like it is running on 5 cyclinders. If that is the case then I guess that he will be going back to the car lot.
