timing seem too ********

Recently had a tune up, and for some strange reason I can now run regular gas with no pinging when I could not really even run regular before without pinging at even relatively low loads. Maybe I shouldn't complain, but I think it SHOULD ping on regular, at least some when goosed at low speed in 4th. It sure did before, and I ran mid-grade because of it and because the factory does not recommend regular. Failure to get any pining usually means the timing is too ********,so it should be advanced. How do I do this with this solid state ignition on my 1993 SHO?

The gap on old spark plugs open significantly due to electrode erosion. This has the same effect as varying the timing.

The new plugs fixed that problem (the new wires may also have fixed a problem also), so the ignition system is probably back on track.

FWIW, your engine has a knock sensor as part of its electronics system. If you've been hearing knocking and pinging, the sensor probably isn't working. I've been running only 87 octane through my '89 since I got it last fall, and have never heard a knock or ping. A properly operating system will automatically retard the timing to eliminate knocking before you even hear it. Of course, too much timing retard will take away alot of power in the SHO.

If the Knock sensor system is working you'll never here pinging, The engine is RUNNING HOT the sensor will retard timing, You need to run PREMIUM Gas, just as it says on the gauge & the filler door. Make certain the cooling system is good. The dash board temp. gauge is worthless.
