So with the arrival of my new timing belt tensioner, I went through some procedures found at Alldata, SHOPP and some forum posts (yay search!) I managed to put my front end (almost) back together. My question after this reading is: "what else needs to happen to ensure correct timing?".

After installing the tensioner we lined up the timing marks on the cam gears to the indents on the upper timing belt cover backplate; the right hand side gear at rest and the left hand side in the middle (per se) of a stroke). We then found TDC on the number one cylinder (closest cylinder to the left hand cam gear), by using a straw (thanks DHMag) and finding the top most position.

We then put the timing belt on and aligned the yellow stripes on the timing belt to the marks on the cam gears, rotated the crank to the yellow mark on 0 degrees (I think that one took two revolutions), released the tension on the tensioner and torqued it, and then rotated until the white mark matched up with the 0 degree mark. At that point the marks on the cam gears aligned with the indents on the backplate again.

So I ask again what else needs to happen to ensure correct timing?

My other question is what am I supposed to do with the CPS strap? I put it through the little hole in the middle timing belt cover, but I don't know where exactly the wire is supposed to route.

Sorry for the long read!

I thought all you had to do was set both camp sprockets so the notches on the sprockets align with the notch on the plates. Set the crank sprocket aligned with the 0' mark put timing belt on and good to go.. :oogle: Oh, match the timing belt marks to the rest of the marks too.

The timing should be good after that, but to make sure, put the crank pulley back on the cranks keyway just a bit (without movint the cam&cranks position) and make sure that the dot on the edge of it (crank pulley) aligns with the 0 degrees mark on the timing cover.. The CPS should go up to about the mid cover and then there is a hole you put it through so it's out of the way of the cams. It can be a B*tch to get from behind the cover up to the connector but you'll get it.
