Hey me and my buddy did a timing belt on his car and now he just called me saying its shreaded- now he said it has aboue 3/4th left on it- but now the car wont start- i go pal either you nailed the cps and damaged it or the timing belt is off on the bottomw where you cant see it causing it not to start. but now my question is why did it shread...

2 possible causes right

1. tension on it was either to tight or to loose.

2. the belt wasnt installed properly seated on the pulleys and caused it to rub on something.

3. somebody else know of that i didnt think of

Time to rip it back down and find out. I feel your pain, it took me 20 minutes to get the front of the engine back apart after my little timing belt incident. wink

Check over the crank gear, the cps vane attached to it,and if course the slinger (big washer) needs to point away from the engine. If the tensioner is bent/worn, it can cause the belt to walk on the gears. With the covers off, you should see what its rubbing. Good luck.

The belt or its components were either not correct or were not installed correctly. Make sure the timing belt "washer," "slinger" is mounted on the crankshaft as pjtoledo said and immediately adjacent to the crankshaft timing belt pulley, inside the bottom timing belt cover. The belt may have walked on the pulleys. Troubleshoot and repair. Curious about this one.

UPDATE.. well we went into the tearing down and replaced timing belt and found the cps to be shreaded and broken causing it to not start.. the reason being broken im sure is because he must have dropped something in there and eventually worked its way and broke the timing belt and cps- we got it back together and now were doing mine tomrrow.

thanx for your help guys

Then you didn't identify the cause of the problem. You just guessed that "he must have dropped something in there and eventually worked its way and broke the timing belt and cps." Did you find a loose part inside the timing covers? If not, you had better be sure of the cause so you don't repeat it. This is a chance to learn from your expensive mistake, but it sounds from your post that you are getting ready to do it again. What was the root cause?

Well i didnt guess i know it- theres a huge crack in the top timing cover and the belt was shreaded on one side only the inside- there is nothing on the inside to shread it- and once that shreaded badly it ripped the cps.. he has been driven for a while now and the belt is fine.. i know for a fact it was because first time when we did it he drove home and it was making this weird noise and than he found a hole in the cover.

You don't understand the meaning of "root cause." What caused the "huge crack" in the top timing belt cover? The timing cover doesn't touch the belt unless it or the belt is damaged or not installed correctly. Unless you know that something was dropped onto the cover and cracked it, you're still just guessing. It may have been the shreaded belt that damaged the cover. It may have even been that the belt was damaged before it was installed or while it was being installed.

Yes, the damaged belt most likely took out the CPS wiring, but you still have to determine what started the problem in the first place. If you don't, there is no guarantee that it won't happen again. And that would be bad.

well since im just guessing than we will see if it happens again correct- only if im wrong it would happen again..

your absolutly right about the belt not touching the cover- hence my knowing that something was in there that flew out and broke the cover..
