Ok, I replaced the thermostat in my 1993 MTX. I thought it was not functioning correctly because when the car would idle after driving on the highway (50 degrees) the temp gauge would rise to n-o and then the fan would bring it back down to the middle. When I would drive the car it would be in the middle of the gauge. I replaced it with a 180 degree t-stat from AutoZone but the one I pulled has a 195 stamped on it and it has no jiggle valve. It also looks new, is this the Robertshaw performance stat SHOtimes mentions in their cooling article? Should I stay with the 180 thats in there now or go back to the 195?

P.S. when driving now the gauge stays around a-l is this normal?

I've always heard that from the factory specs, the mtx were 180 and the atx were 192. Both of my mtx's run around the A, while the atx runs a bit higher and seems to use the fan more often. I would go back to the Motorcraft 180 w/ the jigglevalve.

i dunno where you live shoboy3, but i'm in toronto, ontario, and i have recently replaced my t-stat... what you have described is what mine does as well... if it sits idling for a while, it will make it up to about the middle of the "R" in "NORMAL" before the fan will come on, which will bring it down to about the middle of the gauge... if i'm driving it (during the winter) the gauge sits between the "A" and the "L", which sounds like yours... i think yours is okay... (either that or both of ours are poo pooed...

I have tried lots of different T-Stats in my race SHO. The OEM Ford is by far the best. All of the others I've tried actually make my SHO run warmer because they don't have enough flow to them. Eventhough most of them are rated at 180 degrees, the restricted flow makes them run hotter than the 195 degree OEM.

What he said! In addition, the jiggle valves are missing in some aftermarket cheapo thermos, which makes it a bear to bleed the system of air. Use the Ford part.

I have had trouble with my thermostat on my 1994 MTX too. I replaced it a while ago but it still doesn't register above the 'n' usually, even when I run it hard. any advice?

Both the MTX and the ATX use a 192-195 degree F thermostat. I have used Robert Shaw units without any problems. I like the premium Robert Shaw "Generation2" units, I have run both p/n's 762-192 and 762-180. The last 3 digits are the control temperature in degrres F. BTW, the 180 degree unit allows the SHO engine run cooler on the street than the either the Motorcraft of Robert Shaw 192-195 units. Anyone with a super ot turbocharger setup or a track car really needs to upgrade their complete cooling system, 2- or 3-row radiator, 180 degree thermostat, higher pressure cap, etc...

What you had was perfectly normal. Mine runs right in the middle. Driving at holds at M of NORMAL. If I sit and idle it will rise to just under the N of NORMAL and the fan will bring it back down to M. What you had was good and Your better off with the ford 180 t-stat w/ the jiggle valve. When you install it, make sure the jiggle valve is at the 12 O'clock position. Its there for bleeding purposes.
