Is it ok to get one without the hole at the top? Autozone had a good one but couldn't get a gasket. Advance Auto had one but it had no holes at the top and they wanted like 9 bucks for the gasket. The Advance one was different from a regular thermostat though so I'm thinking its just a different design for the same purpose as the holes. I can get it from Ford also but that's the most pricey. Any advance is appreciated.

That hole is called a jiggle-valve. wink

It allows the cooling system to purge itself of air when you refill it.

I see it as being a luxury instead of a necessity.

Jiggle-valve= good, proper, the right way but sometimes difficult to find

no Jiggle-valve= okay, will work, cheap and readily available

If you are getting a thermostat with a gasket you are getting the wrong one. Our thermostats use an O-ring to make a seal its attached to the t-stat.

do yourself a favor and don't get the one from advance.....

its more than likely a Stant thermostat.... and not that great.... i'd go either motorcraft on the thermostat, or another brand that fails in an open position rather than closed...

the jiggle valve is actually a very nice thing to have....i'd also suggest finding a brand with it... i'm not sure on autozone's brand or how they are made, but for something that costs so little and can do so much damage, why sacrifice quality?

make sure the jiggle valve is at the 12o'clock position when you install the new one wink

Is the O-ring reuseable?

Yes, it is re-useable, but I wouldn't recommend it from my experience. A few years ago, my t-stat got stuck closed on a 100 degree August day, which made for not good times. Anyway, get the Motorcraft, plain and simple. It will be the best. You'll get the new O-ring, along with a t-stat that flows better than the other ones. If you need any help putting in the new t-stat, shoot me an email; I've been through this before
