Still trying to sort out my first SHO. The temp gage does not move at all. Whats the better odds - gage or sending unit? Any way to test either one?

Verify wire is plugged onto the sender.

If it was okay, disconnec it and short it to ground. TEMP guage should then go to full scale. If it does, the sender is probably open.

If the guage doesn't move, the either it or the circuit to it is open.

I would say replace all three: thermostat, gage sender, temp sender. all three will probably be less than $30, and it takes about 20 minutes to replace them.
Better safe then sorry, especially when cheap

That would be the ECT, not the guage sender. Different units. THe ECT has a rwo wire connector and is located more towards the firewall on the water outlet housing.

The guage sender has a single wire and is the forward sender that is screwed into the outlet housing below and slightly forward of the thermostat tube.
