I think i blew out my third gear syncro because when i go to shift into third it grinds everytime, it used to be only in the winter months it would grind but once it got warm it would be fine. Im leaning towards the syncro being gone if this is the case where would i get another? TIA

You can check with Josh at SHO NUT Performance, I believe he has a limited supply left. If not I think I have a few new ones left in stock as well.

First things first though. You should first check that your fluid level is good. Pull the fill plug out and stick your finger in the hole, you should be able to feel the fluid just inside the hole. If you can't then fill it. Also make sure that your clutch release cable doesn't need to be adjusted by sitting in the car and gently pulling up with your foot on the clutch pedal. If you hear a clicking sound it was out of adjustment. Also check your cable or rod shifter to make sure there is nothing that would cause binding. Look for things that don't belong there that could bind it up, or connections that are loose.

Those are the first things you should check whenever you have an issue with your trans/clutch. Next items would be the clutch or TOB itself and then the synchro/blocking rings.

I had eactly the same problem with my 89. It threw me because I knew it was not the syncro or slider. I cured it by:

a. draining the ATF. Follow the instructions for installing the drain plug in the bottom of the transmission.
b. install a good synthetic ATF such as Red Line, Royal Purple or Mobil one. I used mobil because it was cheaper.
c. Third gear will still be a problem until the fluid works its way through the transmission. Take it on a 50 mile drive shifting easy. The grinding should go away.

If this does not work you do have a syncro problem.

Note that the factory used a special ATF that included Friction modifiers that regular ATF does not have.

Give it about 50 miles, it usually takes that much of normal easy driving in order to feel the difference. If that doesn't cure it try draining the fluid and replacing it with new fresh stuff.

Guess I should have asked this first, but how low were you? If it was way low it is possible that there is damage to the synchro. Also, where is it leaking from? You will want to find the source for the leak so you avoid situations like this in the future. The trans is sealed and it is not normal to lose fluid, with the exception of the tiny bit that escapes from the vent at WOT like at the track.

There are about 103,000 on the transmission. Replaced clutch with southbend rally clutch and new fidanza flywheel in august of 03 just for reference. When i filled it up the transmission i poured the whole quart in and about and 1/8 to a 1/16 leaked out when i pulled the funnel out. After i filled it up i drove about 30 miles and it hasnt shown much improvement. I have never really noticed any leak is it possible just that it leaked some from over time

They will leak a bit over time through the vent, but really not that much to make that big of a difference. When you replaced your clutch did you refill it then? Whenever you pull the halfshafts out you'll lose fluid.

Check your axle seals where the halfshafts go into the tranny. Check your shift shaft seal which is under the convoluted boot (you'll have to pull the boot off to see it). Your input shaft seal you won't be able to check unless the tranny is down. The axle and shift shaft seals can be replaced while the tranny in place, the input shaft seal can only be replaced when the tranny is down and opened up. Also check for wet areas on the trans. It will be difficult if you have any other types of leaks that could drain down on the trans though. Any fluid spots on the driveway where you park?

Edit: Also check your VSS area to see that it's dry.

I havent noticed any spots but ill keep my eye on it. Ive driven about 60 miles and its still griding not as bad though so this weekend i will prolly change the fluid to mobil 1 synthetic and see if that helps if not should i just take the tranny out and put new syncros and block rings in ?
