How do you know when a synchro goes in our transmissions? Tonight, my second gear, i think, lost it's synchro. I was driving and suddenly second gear wasn't available for downshifting without IMMENSE grinding, so I stopped doing it. Then, during regular 1-2-3-4-5 driving, second would grind unless I perfectly rev-matched. Now I know my clutch is screwed, has been since I got the car, but does this mean that my second gear synchro is screwed now too? Trans guys, if this is something you understand, please lend your knowledge, it is much needed, I'm terrified.

mine does the same thing, but only when its cold.. im assuming if you have the clutch pressed to the floor and it still grinds then yea the synchro is shot, i know mines going. i had a saturn that had 3rd go out in it and would grind anytime i tryed to go to that gear.. so it sounds like time for trans rebuild imo

Maybe, maybe not, but the more you grind it the more you risk screwing it up if it's not already screwed up. Never force the trans into gear. What can start out as a problem with the pressure plate fingers can turn into a trans-disaster for the blocking rings and synchros.

Turn the car off, keep your foot off the clutch pedal. Can you change through all the gears without force?

Check the fluid level. When you pull the fill plug, could you feel the fluid just under the rim of the plug?

Drain the fluid and look at the fluid. Is the fluid red? Black? Does it stink? Are there any metal flakes in it?

The trans takes 3.1 quarts of fluid. You won't be able to drain it all unless you have a drain plug. Refill the trans with some good fresh fluid and see if that helps any.

You could have a TOB issue, you could have a PP issue, you could have a trans issue. Without seeing it, it's hard to say which. Your best bet is to get it to someone close by who can help you if you're not sure. I see that Tom has extended an invite, I'd take him up on it if I was you. :thumb:

NO! The only MTX parts available are the bearings and seals. No more blocking rings, or syncro's.

Unless you've stockpiled the parts in which case the answer is yes.

Somebody should convince somebody to make some more. How hard would it be to make them, anyway?

It's not how difficult it would be to manufacture them. The tooling and machine set up costs in addition to the manufacturing costs for small quantities produced are what would push the selling "per piece" price much higher than what most would be willing to pay for them.

Well I've had this CAD software that I've been dying to use... does anybody have dimensions of them?

Eric Vervalin has the same problem it sounds like your having. He can get it in there but...at the right rpm.

They would be difficult to measure. I think that something this complex would be more accurately done if scanned by computer software. I couldn't even begin to do it properly. :frown:
