Swapping used 3.0 into my 94.., few q's.

I'm swapping a rebuilt 3.0 I picked up for $400 at a salvage yard in Wichita on Saturday. Heard and watched the motor run, and have the reciepts for the rebuild parts/labor. It was a rear wrecked car.

The motor I had blew a rod.

The questions I have..

What is invovlved in swapping the motors? My dad and I have have done a clutch job the hard way, without an engine brace. I'm thinking pull the motor, swap the tranny and clutch onto the new motor, and then put it back in?

Will anything need replaced, like hoses or..?

It's an 89 motor with 86,000 total miles and 2,000 after the rebuild. My car is a 94 mtx.

There are a few things different on the 89 engine, than on your 94. You will need to swap in your starter and alternator. Also when I did my engine swap with my red 93 I lifted both the engine and tranny out at the same time and put them both back in at the same time. Theres lots of stuff that needs to be removed and uncliped, so just take your time, and dont rush things.

I swapped a 90 engine into my 94. The things I found to be different were the engine wiring harneses(different plugs where the engine harness plugs to the car harness) and the front motor mount/alternator bracket,the 94 alternator would not bolt to the older engine. I think they were the only differences.

i was just gonna say that about the harnesses...same happened to me when i put an 89 motor in my 93...

So that will require some cutting/splicing? Also, are you saying that the alternator from my 94 won't work on the 89 motor?

no cutting required. Just remove the 89 engine harness and replace it with the 94 harness. The 94 alternator will work you just need to use the mounting brackets off the 94 engine. The harness is fairly straight forward to switch but requires the removal of the upper intake,so get som gaskets for it.

We have to old motor pulled and on the cherry picker, and the new motor on the stand. We've switched most the accesories, and taken the intake, fuel rail, several tubes/clamps and the wiring harness off the old motor. We will switch the wiring harness and get the gaskets tomorrow hopefully.

Also, are the starters used on the SHO, SHO specific, or are they used on several different types of taurus's/cars? The rod damaged the starter we have, so I need a new one. I found one on ebay for $75 or so, but they don't say its SHO specific in the item details, but has SHO in the title. I'll post a link sometime soon.

Not quite sure about the starter, but at quick glance it seems to be the same as a plain 3.0. Call your local parts store and ask them if the part numbers are the same.

Ordered the starter today.

We have the wiring harness in, the transmission on, and the motor mounts bolted up, and the halfshafts in.

Now comes the long process of clamping back all the hoses, and clipping together all the plugs.
