ok mods, i didn't know which maintenence seciton to put this in, and put it here for initial exposure, but feel free to move as you please. :)

starting two days ago, getting worse by the day, the horn will go off at random times for random amounts of time. for the "longer" honking sessions, a run outside to tap the horn will stop it. Any ideas? an electrical short somewhere? Chris suggested clockspring (no clue what that is/does etc though :nut: ).... bad to drive if i disconnect the horn itself, or ok to drive? ......... help please

not a problem to drive without a horn. **** i don't even know if any of them in my cars still work. i'd just unplug the wires on the contacts under the air bag. just unplug the battery, remove the 2 screws on the steering wheel for the air bag, move that out of the way and there are two wires on the metal plates for the horn, just pop those off and reinstall.

doh! gen II advice flowing out of me. ignore that.

If they are anything like the Mustang of the same day... I fixed an 88 GT horn that was doing the same thing after I replaced the horns... There is foam in the horn pad that seperates the copper contatct plates that deteriorates over time. I popped the pad off and found some comparable thickness foam and cut it to fit and all was better. HTH!

Yep it would do it randomly. On the Mustang you'd just pull/pop it off. Dunno 'bout the Taurus. Maybe someone else can help here. Actually if you have a shop manual (haynes/chilton) it'll probably show how to remove it as you need to pull it to remove the steering wheel.

If you want to disable the horn, why not just disconnect the connector right at the horn itself (front driver's side on the subframe)? The horn relay may still click, but that wont make you unpopular with your neighbors.

Your horn pad is deformed to the point of being ubber sensative.

Take it off, flatten it out, and reinstall. DONE!

Not Needed

My dad got a 95 volvo 850 turbo with an R chip when he gave me his SHO, i dont know how he did it but the horn in his volvo would go off when ever he hit a bump and then it started to get alot worse so he just disconnected it. Its probably been like that for a year now

fixed it yesterday morning. :) took apart the wheel and inspected. looked like the tab that contacted the "thing" to complete the circuit had been bent to be right next to the "thing" all the time, almost touching. not sure what would make it go off, but i bent the tab straight again and put everything back together. all has been well since. *keeps fingers crossed*

(also flattened out the horn pad kenny, so maybe that was it..... )
