I recently replaced my aging, whining, fuel pump with a 155lph Walbro. Everything's worked great, and MUCH quieter, but Tuesday night I went to start my car, and it almost started, but quickly died out. Long story short, my fuel pump wasn't coming on (no noise when turning the key forward). I tried several times, but nothing.

I couldn't believe my new fuel pump gave out so quickly...so I tried runningn a KOEO test...and this time I turned the key, I could hear my pump come on! I got a secondary fuel pump circuit failure code...but after that my car started fine.

I thought it was a random fluke and went ahead and drove it without a problem...until today. I was at the mall when it did the exact same thing. Wouldn't start, no fuel pump. Connected a wire between test pins, turned the key, fuel pump works again...

What could be causing this? Any ideas? I guess I could just keep a paper clip handy...

Well...now I'm not going anywhere. I tried to start my car to get home from work, but I couldn't get the pump to come on. Doing a KOEO didn't even help. I'm getting a 542 code. I don't understand it...the pump is new...what could be doing this?

Did you put in the pump, or a shop? If a shop, take car back. They have to make it right.

If you put it in go back and check the wires, see if you damaged or smashed one, and of course check connections.

I had a shop put mine in, and before the install my gas gauge didn' t go all the way to the bottom now it does, glad I let them do it, unfortunaately it didn't fix the prob. I was experiencing.

good luck.

The 542 code can be stored anytime the car stalls or dies without the key being turned off. Sounds like you may have a loose connection somewhere. Or a fluke and something else is going south such as the IRCM. Did you drop the tank or cut a access hole?

I traced the problem back to a loose connection by grounding the FP test pin and checking the FP relay, cut-off switch, and eventually wiggling the wires going to the pump itself...which started the pump right up. I can't really see/feel anything with the tank in the car, so it looks like I'm going to get to drop the tank and double-check my work. Then again, I just got a dremel...maybe it's time to cut an access hole?
