Speed control servo asymbly / and No Brake lights

Ok here we go my brake lights stoped working, and of corse the shifter wouldnt come out of park, so I thought must be the boo switch. Just for the **** of it I tested all my fuses and found fuse number 1 a 15 amp blown so I replaced it, and it instantly blew again. Obviously a short I Checked all the bulbs and found no problem with them or any wirring. I started to trace the wire and I found it lead to the speed control actuator aseymbly located behind the throtle body and I smelt the burnt wire odor. I pulled the harnes and noted the 2 right ends closest to fire wall were smoked and a little melted so i made sure the harness was ok and with it disconected I have no short any more, and the fuse dosent blow. Now the big question is why is this module doing this, and what do I do to fix other than buying a new one from the dealer and hoping the problem is fixed??? Do you have any help on this or direction I should go in. 94 atx 3.2L

Check the sensor under the master brake cyl. I had this exact same problem but I found that my short was coming from a leaky sensor onto wires. I would suggest checking there for a problem also, it has happened to alot of SHOs. I hope you get it fixed, as I had alot of trouble with mine. I still need to get a sensor for it, but I might just be parting this car out soon anyways...

I was having the same problem with my 95. I replaced the BOO switch and the MFS and neither worked. Then I researched it on here and found this post. It was the sensor leaking alright.

The thing that sucks is that was a factory recall from Ford for 95 and the previous owner(s) never took care of it, and now Ford won't honor the recall since it was 11 years ago. Oh well, the sensor and harness cost me $45 and was a pain in the ass to replace. As soon as I disconnected the old one, the hot wire started melting instantly! Then once I replaced the sensor and wiring, and hooked it back up, the cruise control motor started smoking so I had to disconnect that! The freakin brake fluid leaked everywhere from the leaky sensor, which caused the cruise problem. So now I don't have cruise, but I can live with that. lol

I don't remember any such recall and can find no record or mention of one for the Taurus (and I have a complete set of recalls and TSBs.)

BTW, nice resurrection of a dormant thread! :snicker:

That's odd. The service manager at the Ford dealership I called said it was a recall for 95. Who knows. In any case Ford made an updated sensor and harness to replace the problematic one so now hopefully that'll keep the brake lights working.

He probably has the Taurus confused with the Crown Vic recall for early 90s CVs for the SCDS.

There was a 95 Taurus recall for the speed control, but it was on the 3.8L version and involved moisture freezing in the actuator cable.

Square box mounted to a bracket on the driver's side strut tower with an actuator cable that goes to the throttle body. Single electrical connector.

Also check for a leaky/shorted SCDS, it's mounted to the bottom of the master cylinder. It's also a likely suspect.

Drive away. You just won't have cruise.

The switch is available from your Ford dealer. I do not know if they are available aftermarket. Check there to see if a replacement pigtail is available. Chances are, you'll probably need to salvage one.

Lol this is an old thread but my car was sitting for a couple of days and the battery was dead, when i hooked up the battery charger the sensor under the master cyl started to smoke and i could smell burnt plastic. What is this sensor called? And is it only available from the dealership?

Dealer only.

Cruise (SPEED) Control disconnect switch. Hard telling what it will be called int eh computer system. Just have the parts guy look it up on the diagram. When you find the number, please post it here. One of these days, I need to buy one for my 94.

I got the part from the dealership for around $25 (ill post the part # later). But I cant get the old sensor/switch out from the mater cyl. Does anyone know what size wrench it takes.. It seems impossible to get a wrench on it and have enough room the loosen it. If I take the whole master cyl out will I have to rebleed the whole brake system?

EDIT: My cruise control doesnt even work.... Can I just leave the sensor/switch unplugged and drive the car?? I figured since I dont have CC the car would be fine without it plugged in but someone clue me in here!!
thanks

had the exact same problem as above with my 94 SHO ATX (why i got the car for so cheap-would not shift out of park).

Last two pins closest the firewall were badly corroded and shorted together. Got a cruise module from the J/Y and swapped the controler on top of the servo. Cost about 5 bucks.

Yes. Just unplug the connector and the car will be normal except that the CC is 100% disabled.

If you want to test the test of the CC system's operation, just install a temporary jumper into the connector (make certain the jumper cannot short to anything).

Yes. I am referring to the SC disconnect switch that is located under the master cylinder.
