Having just been through getting a flat with my 2013, running over some flashing (roofing) with a nail in it where the nail didn't stay in the tire, was wondering if anyone had put a "real" spare in place of the "temporary mobility kit".

While the compressor with the built-in fix-a-flat got me home from 5 miles away, I'd love to have a real spare that I could actually GO to work and drive home again without worrying. The way it was going, the goo held air in the tire to a point, but only enough to be able to get somewhere to repair it.

Put my own snotty-rope tire plug in it, and it's good to go - maybe I need to carry my repair kit in the car... :snicker:

Again, wondering if anyone had found a spare tire/rim that fit in the trunk in place of the foam, and fit over the brakes of the SHO (not that they seem so big that an 18" rim wouldn't fit)...

Spare tire reply

My dealer got me a complete spare tire kit from a 2009 junked taurus so I could replace that tire inflation package. It cost me $100 for everything tire, jack, etc. In my research, I did find that you can order the same spare tire on the Maxxis Tire web site. Not sure what wheel would work with the tire however. The demo SHO at the dealer had a Maxxis T155 70D 17 as the spare tire. Hopefully this will prevent ever being stranded without a spare.

Doesn't the non PP SHO have a spare tire? Couldn't you get the whole setup from a non-PP or a standard Taurus?

$100. is cheap. Get a space saver spare kit out of a late model Taurus or other Ford product. Probably never used. The space saver spare that came with my Flex is rated for over 2,000 lbs which is a heavier rating than the original stock 20's.

Buying a Maxxus tire and wheel etc. is much more expensive.

I looked into this for light weight wheels/tires for front's on my G8 at strip. Was cheaper to buy M & H Drag Radial fronts to fit the GTO 17" space saver wheels.

Shoulda just stolen the spares out of my son's 2 GTOs!!! LOL

I got a 17" spare on my Mustang GT... it has the same bolt pattern as the Taurus. The 17" rim will not clear the calipers on a PP equiped car. It will have to be an 18" rim, from what I can see.

If these spares from the other Taurus fit, and it is a 17" rim, I would be very interested in the specifics on it, as I was to get rid of the goo in the trunk.

According to the dealership where I have my 2010 SHO w/ PP serviced, the spare for the non-PP SHO or regular Taurus won't work b/c the wheel won't fit w/ the bigger brakes. They didn't suggest a spare tire kit from a 2009 Taurus, the Maxxis Tire web site, and/or using a Maxxis T155 70D 17 as the spare tire. If anyone has tried one of these, please post your review - and if one is preferable to the others.

On the 2010-2012 SHO the PP brakes were only a pad upgrade. No difference in caliper or rotors, so any SHO 19" or 20" wheel will fit.

It was explained to me that the reason we have the fix-a-flat system in place of a spare is due to the fact that the SHO is awd and by putting a spare tire on that is not the same diameter as the 20" wheel n tire (not enough room in spare tire well for 20" spare) you could do serious damage to the drivetrain (the smaller rim/tire would spin faster then the larger one on the opposite side). It sounds logical to me because I have the same issue with my IRS 2003 Cobra. I have 18" rims and the spare is 17". I was told if I get a flat in the rear to put the front wheel (also 18") in the back and the spare up front. Leaving the sizes different in the rear could burn up the rear diff.

If we had the ability to indicate the installation of a spare tire (along with dimensions) would the AWD work properly at that point?

That's beyond my knowledge but my take based on how it was explained to me: as long as the overall diameter of wheel and tire is the same on both sides of the car you're fine because then both wheels will spin at the same speed.

Hypothetically speaking I'd think if you could speed up or slow down one wheel to equal the speed of the one opposite it that should solve the potential for burning up anything....some how I have a feeling there's far more to it than just that though.

Just spoke to my "source" he confirmed for me that if you use a spare that is a different diameter/circumference then the wheel opposite from it you will damage whichever diff the spare is on. Its not the rim size that matters so much as long as the overall circumference of the wheel and tire combined is the same on the spare as it is on whatever wheel/tire you're replacing. Hope that makes sense to all...

Just cut the sidewall of one of my front tires, with only 12k on them.

Ordered two new front ones, tossed the bad one, and put the other one on a stock 20" SHO rim, I bought off of eBay.

I know it will stick out of the tire well, but at least I have a spare tire now.

Also ordered a jack kit. And, I will leave the air pump in there.

Got a flat (left front on my 2010 SHO) a few months ago. I put on the compact spare, drove 25 miles (including 10 miles on a thruway at 50 to 60 mph). The car drove well - no problems. Replaced the tire 3 days later - all was good. TBW

Yes it will

Confirmed. I've had my fullsize spare for over a year now. If you want to get all the parts (attachment hook, OE Ford jack, etc), here are the part numbers:

Code Item
5F9Z-1424-AA WASHER
E6DZ-1462-A NUT - WING
5F9Z-1A381-AA RETAINER
8A5Z-17080-A JACK ASY-

I found these codes and item names on the online diagrams from the 2010 SHO with spare tire.

Ok, my wife has the 2014 Taurus SHO with the PP and got a flat, luckily I was home and was able to take care of things, since the run flat goo didn't work because the tire came off the rim on the inside bead. Since I travel a lot for work I decided to do the full size spare.

First off, since she got the flat and the tires were pretty much due for replacement, I replaced them and kept the best one for the spare. I purchased a stock SHO rim from a junkyard half way across the US. These are not cheap, dealer is $800 and most yards want $600+, but I found this one for $400 shipped. It took about a month to get, I contacted them about this and they told me they were having problems refinishing it, so they got another rim. When it showed up it was pristine, just like new. I was very impressed so on the car it went and the dinged up rim for the spare.

A half bald tire fully inflated and balanced fits snugly into the spare tire hole. I plan on getting a new tire for it when I replace them next time, but for now, this will do.

Now for the other goodies. That list above, you might be able to use it, but they are expensive and I wasn't sure about it fitting. If you look at the picture above you notice the whole spare tire is sunk down into the trunk, well the tire is the height of the trunk, so when I am done it will just be completely flat in there. So I needed parts that would fit to the left of the tire. I found a scissor jack on Amazon for $27, ATD Tools 7462 Scissor Jack - 2 Ton Capacity, it fits in the space and also under the car and is well made, it's not some cheapo so it doesn't wobble or flex when jacking. I then welded a 1/2" bolt to the handle of it so my 3/4" socket will fit it, since that also fits the lugnuts, bought some gloves and wheel chalks for her also.

Here is the finished product, strapped down with some rubber bungee cords, everything is snug as a bug. I still have to move the center bolt for the tire and also I am making a new insert cover for it that will be bigger to cover out to the upper trunk level.

That's interesting that the full size fit. Thanks for photos. I tried this exact same experience a couple of years ago on my SEL with the 19's and although the full size tire fit in the well without deflating it was too high. The fit in the well was not flush so the carpeting/floor panel stuck up about 2 feet. Your carpeting area is built up around the spare well that apparently is the difference.
