I just purchased a 93 ATX SHO for parts. It has some problems. I wanted to see if some of the experts out there can tell me if the drivetrain is shot. 266,000 miles.

Two Problems:

# 1
Motor has a bearing type noise at low RMP..when you rev the engine...you can't hear it. As the engine slows down (2000 rpm - idle)...you can definitely hear it. Sounds like it's in the upper part of the engine.
Maybe the valve train?????
Is it the valves or a bearing down below just sounding as if it's in the top of the engine?

Any ideas?

# 2

When you put the tranny in gear (any gear)...the car doesn't move.

I notice the shifter moves VERY hard between gear selections.

The fella that sold me the car was told the noise coming from the engine compartment is coming from the tranny...IS THAT POSSIBLE?

Thanks for the help / advice.

I read here forum before that a good thing to do is to get on the intake manifold and put a screwdriver up to the head if you can and listen for the clacking (perhaps a stethoscope would be more suited for this though). then you know its the valvetrain. It *may* be coming from the tranny, but I honestly couldnt tell you. But if your car doesnt go in any gear then get your tranny fixed and if it doesnt make the noise any more then its safe to say you know where it came from. But how many miles do you have on your SHO? Because it may be safe to assume its 60k time. Im sure someone else can help a little more than I did. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it. I really bought the car for parts so getting the tranny fixed really isn't an option at this point. I'm just trying to figure out if the engine is any good...and by some slight chance if it's something minor in the tranny?

Maybe someone out there has experienced the same problem with their 93 ATX and could give me a bit more insight.

Thanks again.

I just changed rod bearings on my V6 because it was making the same kind of sound. It had a broken bearing in it but had not spun. There was no damage to the crank.

Wow, hope it's not a rod bearing. Probably is though.

I've never worked on one of these Yamaha motors before...I assume there is a timing belt or chain...is there any chance it could be a bearing on one of the tensioners or pulleys?

Thanks for the reply

I did the "screwdriver" test, and I did hear some clacking. But, I really didnt know what to look for. What does this clacking suggest?
