If you are speaking of the material in between the carpet and the floor, it just pulls up. It's not attatched anywhere. It just acts as a cushion for impact and sound. But if you speak of the undercoating that the metal is sprayed with, do a search. It was discussed about a month ago.

there is also tar paper sound deadening in the car... the best way to get that stuff off is with heat a scraper. If you don't have a heat gun a hair drier may work.

Heat gun, scraper, and a lot of time to completely remove all of it right. That crap does weigh a good bit, I keep everything I take off of my SHO and weigh it before I throw it away, do one pretty big area and fill up a brown paper bag halfway and weigh it, that will be your only inspiration to keep going, LOL. I removed three bags of the stuff with the total weight coming to 36lbs and I still have another bag and a half to go, so another 10-15lbs, there is a lot of weight to be removed from the SHO, you just have to find it and get creative with it and try not to make the car look half assed. I'm still finding pieces that add up every other week or so, heck I think I just took off 20lbs today with misc brackets while doing my one piece front end today. Get rid of the front seats, at 60lbs a piece you definately will feel the difference in removing 90lbs. ( I say 90lbs, because you still have to figure you will have some type of racing seat in there that weighs something, @ 15lbs a piece that pretty reasonable, but I think you can find lighter, I was just guestimating), good luck

well,
guys I started stripping the sho today! man it is really tedious.(boy does my back hurt, and my knuckles are bloody too) I spent about two hours and got up about a couple square feet. It is about five pounds. I have a question thouhg. There seems to be three different kinds. there is one that is really black and foamy, there is one that is black and tar-like, and there is one that is gray and rubbery. This is in the trunk by the way. the foamy one was were the spare was and the tar was on the trunk floor and the rubber was on the sides of the trunk. My question is do different materials react better to different things like water heat. So far I have only been using a butter knife and my bare hands. Any info will help. thanks everyone.

I feel your pain, but you are toughing it out like a man, I had the easy way out with a 1000F heat gun that made that shit slide off like butter. I would highly recommend buying one from Home Depot or Lowes (whichever is in your area) or at least try a hair dryer, it will make your life so much eeeeeeeasier.

Yeah, I noticed the different colors and thought the same Q myself, but eventually I came to the conclusion that the tar is just, well, tar, and I think that the rubbery grayish white substance is/ was used between all of the pieces spot welded together that make up the actual shell of the car to keep out moisture, water, the elements, etc... and to also aid in chassis rigidity, it's cheaper than seem welding all the vehicles panels together, kinda like caulking a tub/ sink together I guess? I think the foamy stuff falls into the same category as the above grayish substance, BUT I could be wrong though, I'm only human here, LOL. Let us know how it's coming as you progress, post pictures if you can,

good luck

yo chris you da man! no but seriously I just went down to harbor frieghts and bought a heat gun. man can I tell a difference. Although I burnt myself a couple of times it was worth it. I got all of the tar up. (no prob. pells like an orange) but I tried to get the rubbery stuff with the heat gun but it just started smoking. so I lowered it from a 1000 degrees to 600. it started working but then after about 30 secs. it started to smoke too. any thoughts? did yours smoke too? well at the end of the day I have the whole trunk done and am about 12 pounds lighter. (one whole bag) thanks chris!

Yo man, I'm happy to help out, yeah, wait until you rip out the carpet and get up onto the firewall and under the pedals, have fun, that shit took me a couple of days to do it all so I had to drive around with all metal floors and one seat, LOL, but it was worth it though. It wouldn't have been so bad to do the floors but all of the damn patterns that are stamped into the floor pan are crazy.

About the gray shit? Yup, it smoked and smelled nasty!! BUT, I just heated that shit up on 1000F and had to scrape quite harder, but I got ALL of that shit off also, I forgot about the yellow shit in the trunk, but the 1st gens might not have had that yet (mines a 94), and the yellowish shit wasn't too friendly. It's great that you have the trunk done, keep it going and soon you'll be done, good luck and let us know how it's coming along.
