My motor is going into the machine shop on monday for a rehone, new rings, new bearings, new freeze plugs, and a polishing the crank. So, I have been breaking her down to the bare short block. When I removed the oil pump it slipped and touched the crank.... Now, it isn't too bad, but what I am worried about now is a continual oil leak. All of those type of seals (like the front main) seem to have two sealing parts. An outer portion of the seal and an inner portion. In examing several of the new seals waiting to go on this motor, it seems that the inner portion of these seals (the portion that has the spring pushing on it) does the majority of the sealing. The oil pump did not touch the part of the crank where that inner sealing portion of the front main seals. It did touch really close and to a bit where the outer portion of the seal touches the crank.

Ok, I am hoping that because the inner portion is not damaged that I won't be looking at a permanent oil leak, correct?

Thanx, Doug

You can always polish that part of the crank also. Just to be extra carefull.

Tom

I will make sure to point it out to the machine shop, see what they can do. I can only feel it barely with my finger nail if I really try.

Are my thoughts about the seal correct?

Thanx, Doug

What is the problem when the oil pump touches the crank? I thought they were always touching, thus the crank turning the pump.

When I pulled the oil pump off, it slipped and it touched the part of the crank where the seal touches it, but didn't damage enough to cause a problem. Yes, the oil pump is rotated by the crank.
