Rest in Piece Front Chin Spoiler and Carbon Fiber FTR rod. 74BA847C F071 4D0C 8D4D 17DEBB96BC02

This happened last week. I was in a rush to get data logging underway and took it out in the rain to look at drywall job to quote. I had the wrong house number in MAPS, and had to turn around. I pulled off on a side street neighborhood off the main road...didn’t notice anything when I pulled on the road. Turned around in a driveway, pulled up near the main road and called the customer. When I was all set I started to pull forward and a car had also just turned out onto the main road. I stopped, they saw me and stopped and waved me ahead...thanks.

I pulled straight out into the road, all I could see was a wide puddle of water. Maybe was going 4mph. I felt the road dip down and then scrape/snap/boom. Started cussing and then I heard dragging. Waited on the side of the road for an hour for my GF’s daughter to bring me my jack and tools to fully remove the chin spoiler/splitter setup. 1D8A541B 6C88 442D 8E61 14C928FF395D

I was about 30 min away from home. It took so long that the battery to my laptop died and I was unable to data log. So when I pulled back in to the garage without a datalog and a grenaded front end...I was not happy and it still pains me to see this. Sucks that it also took a chunk of my front bumper with it. 97B73DAA 2284 4ADE 93BA D79F455527FB

That’s painful to look at. This post should have had a graphic content warning!
Sorry to see this happen, what’s next now?

I’m actually seeking out the guy who did all the fiberglass work on it, I bet he can fix it. I’ll order a new rod and not sure about the missing plastic of the bumper but I would assume that can be fixed as well. For the time being it’s got the original lower plastic back on and it looks weird as **** to me after so many years of the chin spoiler and 16 months with the splitter. I’m also thinking about buying a new bumper cover...and keeping this stock looking setup for the track if I think the splitter is slowing it down.

Ouch! Is the splitter fiberglass? Maybe it could be repaired and molded to the front bumper since you're going to need to repair/replace it anyway?

Yes it’s fiberglass. It’s made with tabs so it can be bolted on and off the front bumper. I want to just get it repaired if I can. I like that it’s not molded to the bumper in an emergency like this, I was able to remove it and continue on my way.

The puddle broke it brother. Now I know to avoid puddles at all cost.

So about a year ago I posted on here (somewhere) that I noticed I never got boost in 1st and 2nd gear unless I was at WOT. It was a noticeable power loss. As it warmed up, the problem went away and so I quit looking for a fix.

Well, now it's in the 30's every morning and I've noticed it again. The only difference is now I have exhaust cut-outs. Well yesterday, when I was opening the garage I accidentally hit the one that opens my cut-outs. "Eh, I need to open them occassionally to keep them from building up." The ride to work was literally night and day. At 2,500 RPMs (normal to moderate acceleration) it would easily build a few pounds of boost in 1st and 2nd gear. It's that feeling after you've just installed a mod and all you want to do is play around with it. Again, this morning I opened the cut-outs and my car simply wants to drive faster.

In warm weather, the exhaust cut-outs seem to reduce (or definitely not increase) my power, but obviously the reduced back pressure in cold weather is helping right now. I'm just wondering if you guys know of anything that I should be servicing/checking that could be causing this increased back pressure during cold weather? Or do you guys notice the same thing?

Only thing I could think of is condensation build up while the car is turned off

I ordered the regular aluminum ones because the carbon fiber ones were out of stock.

Am I missing something I don't see any damage to the splitter can't believe a pothole did that . Something had to grab it from underneath... where was the first initial impact in order to do damage like that. Did it leave a mark or damage on the Splitter.?

The splitter has almost nothing wrong with it...except the tiniest little mark/indentation directly in front of the rod that got broken in half. The split in the chin spoiler actually isn’t a huge surprise bc when I started trailering it to the track...the first time I left the bumper on and ended up with a very tiny crack in the top of the chin spoiler...like an 1/8” long but I noticed it. So from the impact that tiny crack is where it split. Breaking a rod in half and taking a chunk out of the bumper is pretty impressive.

Today's the last day on e30 :( on to 93 and winter tires.

I have my winter tires on, but so far I'm boycotting the switch to 93, heck no, e30 won't go... heck no, e30 won't go!

Until the first hard start, then I'll probably change my tune, pun intended! :)

Decided to do a little work on the SHO today, so I started the install of my quad tips. Got the initial cuts done and the tips mounted, but found the isolators are worn out and cause the mufflers to sag with the added weight.

Plan to replace those then trim it out some more to pull them up into the valence, shooting for the GT500 looks.

Thoughts? This is with stock mufflers, so I have limited geometry to work with.
