So the engine and trans don't want to go together

That is somewhat true. The clutch alignment tool is just to get the disc hole near the center of the tranny's main shaft axis. It doesn't guarranty that the spline notches will be lined up, and when you're bolting the pressure plate to the flywheel the clutch is "let out", that is, it's clamped. Harder than heck to rotate the disc now.

So what you do is put the tranny in a gear to make it more difficult for its' gears to rotate. Then put a 3/4" or 19mm socket and breaker bar on the front of the crank and turn it clockwise a little. The splines will line right up and the shaft will go right in.

Thats a realyl great idea, but what i have found out in a few clutch jobs recently is that even with a clutch alignment tool the clutch doesnt get perfectly centered, what i used was a digital caliper that measured to 1000th of an inch. I guess i'm a little percistent because i have read that the clutch aligns itself automatically at the first startup  is this true?

At the risk of sounding foolish, I have to ask:

If I'm lying on my back with the tranny in both hands, struggling mightlily with it, using 100% of my energy and focus just to get the damn thing close, then how the heck am I supposed to get at the front of the engine with a breaker bar?

If you don't have a tranny jack to hold the tranny in place (you can usually rent one for ~$20/day and it makes the job a zillion times easier), you can also sling a ratchet strap over your transverse engine support bar and around the tranny to help hold the tranny in place so you can use a ratchet on the crank pulley with one hand and push the tranny into place with the other.

Cripes, now I'm giving away the secrets! :bonk:

You can at least put the tranny on your regular floor jack to help with the lifting.

You need to watch some MacGuyver re-runs. He's my hero; gets the job done and doesn't spend any money.;)

with the hassle of trying to wresle the trans through the fender well you'd be better off just dropping the subframe. its really not that tough of a job.

I could not agree more!!! I tried the thru the fender method and it didn't work out too well for me and I ended up dropping the subframe anyway. Just finished this job last week and it was NOT fun, but now I know I'll just pay someone to do the next one.

OK, so you mean that, maybe next time I should use the right tools then....?

I managed to not see this post, but I agree with it! The only reason you should take it out the side is if you don't have proper engine support and car lift height. I did mine like that and all I have to say is, have fun putting the tansmission back in! And about time length, I can have the transmission out faster with dropping the frame, as compared to the fender well. Never will I do the fenderwell removal again!

Definetly drop the subframe, it doesnt take mutch once you get a hang of it. What i use is a tranny jack addapter to my floorjack but what i did was put a board on top to create a flat sucface for tranny to sit. just jack it up to the motor align and push the tranny together with the motor it helps if the motor is sitting on a cinder block or something to give it balance at the right angle. You have to make sure the tranny catches both dowel pins and sits flush then you can bolt it on. People make a common mistake using bolts to "guide" the tranny and crack bells.

This is the adapter like 30$ at murrays or something.

I don't know Tom, it seems every time I try a MacGuyver move myself I end up with a bigger mess than I started with. :omg:

Yea if it weren't for bob and brian I wouldn't of had the success I did. I swear by alignment tools, and also perseverance. I'll go through the fender well any time.

Thanks Bob and Brian

Well, if you think it was easy that way, dropping the frame with be MUCH easier to you! I've dropped the tranny about 7-8 times and I can tell you from experience that the fenderwell is much more of a task to put the tranny back in. Doing it through the fenderwell, the frame is in the way and you pretty much have to man handle the transmission by yourself without help. With the frame out of the way, you have a friend called "jack" and it will help you get that tranny in within minutes! :thumb:
