The car smokes under accelerration and the "check oil" light comes on every 3 weeks or so. Is this just worn rings? What's my best bet for a fix? Engine swap is kinda expensive for me. (+)

Is the smoke coming out of the tailpipes ? Is the engine leaking oil ?
My car dosen't burn any oil. But some gaskets and seals are soooo old that when oil pressure increase (read 4 to 7k rpms) oil is really spilling out and leaking on the manifolds. It creates sometimes a lots of smoke behind me. And it also totaly destroyed my driveway in a year.

If your tailpipes are tossing soot, you probaly need new valve stem seals. NOT an easy job...and it won't totally eliminate the smoke. It's a natural that the rings and cylinder walls are worn in proportion to the valve stem seals...contributing to the smokey accelleration.

Valve stem seals are servicable with the engine in the car, but not the rings and cyl walls.

If it makes you feel any better, my black 93 MTX is a "smoker". It's has smoked under WOT since I got it. I am now up to 1 quart of oil per 500 miles and there are NO puddles in my driveway...so I know it's all going out the tails...and burning on the cats

My '93 uses a quart every 500 miles. After two bottles of Auto RX and 5k miles it was 1 quart every 2500 miles. I was amazed.

I sorta hate to bring this thread back to life but I am putting a quart of no-smoke in the car every 600-800 Miles along with a quart of oil. It Smokes under heavy acceleration and WOT but only out the tails. Sometimes when I get home at night I can see a little in the headlight but when I pop the hood, nothing. Is it the valve stem seals or what? I was thinking rings with nearly nearly 185000 miles on this engine. But I really don't want to pull the engine to get new rings, and have it bored a little...how pricey is that job, on average? I know that's alot of questions but the WOT smoke bothers me, as does the oil consumption.

I'd take a look around the valve covers and plug wells. Also check the cam seals. Leaving any spots on the driveway?

You basically have a worn out motor. Did you ever try the AutoRX in the post above your last one? It will make a difference.

If you want to really improve your situation and the car, look into swapping a lower mileage 3.0 or 3.2 in there...., can be done in a weekend, and used good motors arn't that expensive.

That is my next step. It is still great on Power, I can still bark second, but ti just smokes some. I haven't noticed any spots on the driveway, well, I have but it's from the power steering.

I thought you meant smoke out of the exhaust...? You mean it is leaking externally? That is a different story. Take a few weekends and patch that P/S leak, and the oil leaks. Then go from there.

FYI...barking 2nd with a highmileage tranny won't do you very well...

FIXED

hahaha, diff pins are frequent movers.....:woohoo: :oogle:

Good luck, mine was a bit difficult to track down, but after valve cover gaskets, plug well seals, and replacing 2 hoses, I don't have any smoke except on wot upshifts(soot)....then again, thats when it moved....:(

it is smoke out of the exhaust. on the driveway is from the ps fluid, it's the rack and pinion I believe, I'll have to do some searching. I may start saving and get a 3.2 ...hehehe...

When I bought my 94mtx it smoked out of the exhaust during hard WOT acceleration, between 4500k - 7000k rpm & needed a quart of oil every 1000k miles or so. It sat in a garage for 3 1/2 years without even being turned over before I bought it though so Im sure it had something to do with it. I just switched to Royal Purple 10w40, it had 5w30 or 10w30 before... I cant remember. Anyway I already put over 30k miles on it since and its not smoking anymore. Maybe a bit thicker oil or a stop leak additive might at least improve your smoking.

ok, I will do a compression check. But only on the front bank (most likely) because I have a tendency to mess up rear wires. I will do this next weekend maybe.

Do a leak down test.
It is like a compression test but backwards.. you bring piston up to TDC Both valves closed and you put 100 psi into the cylinder....now the easy part of diagnossis.. the cylinder should hold the air you put in if its leaking use your ears to find it example listen to the exhaust pipes if you here air blowing than the exhaust valve is your proplem..if air is heard in the intake manafold it the intake valve..if you hear air comming out the oil cap its the piston rings.or possible a valve guide..if you heard air in the crankcase put a thick oil into the cylinder and then repat test is noise is still heard its the valve guide/seals not the rings (the oil would seal the ring temperally)
