I might be pulling my 90's tranny to use in a SHO and when I was driving the 90 it had a shifting problem of sorts and it was not the rod shifter. Anytime I wanted to go to gear it'd be fine enough for normal drivin, but for speed shifting, well that was kinda impossible. It's like you put the car into 2nd lets say or right above it then put it in gear. Kind of like the shifter stopped and then went into gear, but when it went into gear there was no resistance and I never heard a grinding noise from the tranny so the syncros should be fine, what could it be, blocking rings

Most likely a blocking rings problem. You can try just changing the fluid, but if you are gonna have the transaxle out you might as well do the blocking rings too.
