Scott,
Does your sho have all its power?
For the longest time, I heard the SAME thing. My sho dynod 99 horses at the time eek!
It turned out, my exhaust (catback) had a restriction (broken up cats)(you would've had to seen it to believe it!) The previous owner must've tried to "gut" the cats which resulted in my problem!
Got that removed and my sho regained its power. NOW, when the secs open it is SMOOOOOTH and NO NOISE! thumbs_u

My exhaust is in need of some attension and the car has a slight "stumble" just before the secondaries open but otherwise it goes pretty good

check out my dyno printout here
Look at the drop when the secondaries open!
You may not have as severe a restriction as I did, but it could be possible that may be your problem. You described the noises exactly to what I heard.
Good luck!

Please, please, please don't ever rev the engine enough to make the secondaries open until it's warm and has been for a while. You are risking more damage, like oil starved and otherwise ruined bearings, because the oil is still thick and not getting everywhere it needs to be.

OOPS!!!!!!!!

It is warm when it happens it's just usually the first time they open that I hear it?

I may not be the smartest thing out there but I have always let my vehicles warm completely, especially coming from the Chicago area.

With 106K I don’t drive her too hard!!!!!!!! eek!

Haha That's all? My '89 is just about to turn 150,000... and some members here have well over 200,000 miles!

Glad to hear you don't rev it when it's cold...... but I had a thought, maybe your secondaries need lubed? I don't know if this is a common problem, but I would think that they should have some kind of grease or something where the shaft passes through the plenum. Just a thought.

I would make sure your secondary’s are opening properly.

With hood open and engine running:

Grab a hold of the throttle body, and crack it until your engine hits about 5k rpm. Watch the linkage that attaches the butterflies to the vacuum actuators, and see if both of them move around 4k rpm. Who knows, maybe you will hear the noise then.
