My engine made a wierd noise this morning, almost a clucking sound from the left side. Then after about 2 min it went away. It hadn't been started in almost a week, but when I took it out of storage this spring and started it for the first time in 5 months, it was fine. I really don't want to take any chances so I'm going to be putting new cams in. I was looking for an excuse and this was it. I guess the SHO Shop is working on a Stage 1 cam. Does anybody know how far along this is? I really don't want to put new cams in and then have the Stage 1s come out and have to buy them over again.

Also, I wouldn't worry about the pin they put in. It's common for machine shops to do that to attach pieces of metal. I have an attachment for an airtool that is put together with a pin and it's solid as a rock, and it's under a lot of stress every day. I would be more weary of a weld than a pin.

Unless your engine turns over 10000rpms, then it should hold up just fine. The pin itself on the cam isn't doing all the holding anyway. The sprocket is still being held on by itself. After looking at their cams and seeing how simple it is, I'm just going to pin them myself.

Is SHOfast planning on doing cams for the V8? If so, what will they accomplish (ie. any perf gains, or just a solid shaft w/no sprocket issues)?

Actually, we have installed the V8 Stage I camshaft kits in a few cars now with pretty good results. The cams are actually a Stage I/II hybrid which seems to work good on the ATX SHOs, both V6 and V8. If you're getting your camshafts pinned, I see no reason not to grind the cams to a hotter profile, which is what we are doing. We've seen a 15hp gain on the camshafts, however I feel more potential HP can be gained by opening up the butterflies a bit. Only dyno testing will tell.

The camshaft pinning as you very well know is the final solution to this camshaft problem we've been experiencing. Cost of this procedure is $499. Cost of the HYPERformance Camshaft Kit is and additional $800 and includes shims, notched valve buckets, and shims. The reason for the notched valve buckets is to allow the use of the V6 shims in the V8 SHO. We would need your camshafts and valve buckets in advance to perform the modification and get down to business in making the V8 SHO engine what it should have been from the factory.

Questions can be directed to myself @ SHO Shop.

Tom,

In addition to what Kirk asked, how difficult is the installation of the cams themselves? I've heard there is some sort of tensioning device under the timming chain cover that needs to be "reset" in order to reinstall the cams. Would reinstalling the cams require removing the timming chain cover and/or pulling the motor?

Thanks!

Well it wouldn't require pulling the motor out. My beloved SHO is now 400kms away from its caring home,at the dealer( funny two Ford dealerships and two engine rebuilt shops have never seen one, let alone worked on one) So me being stupid and thinking well with one cam on the verge of going south and the fact that a new one still has the potential of fouling. So I tell the dealer to rip them all out and i'll send them away to get pinned. My bill at the dealer is $4200 odd dollars(canadian that is) something like 34 hours labour and another $1200 for other parts that will have to replaced in the process, tensioners and ect.... Now I find that is alot of money to fix a car that hasn't even broke down yet? Thats no including the money I have to pay to send the cams to cali, the Shoshop. So totall bill is just above $5000... good thing for Visa's. Anyways a good mechanic can rip the cams out with out removing the motor. and i just want to know if it's worth sending them to the Shoshop with all the shit i hear about them. $6000 worthj of cams would suck to lose. thanks for the info

Send them to Doug at FPS to be welded. Stronger and much cheaper that way. Save your money for other mods

Ford Performance Specialties. I'm planning to take it down there after the convention (it's near Atlanta by the way). After my problems with the SHO Shop underdrive pulleys I would avoid them whenever possible.
