Back in Michigan ... again.
My friends 92 won't even turn over...was fine one day then the next it won't go. We replaced the starter & then took it off again to have it checked out, just to make sure it's good and it is. Turn the key, everything lights up on the dash just fine. We crossed the terminals at the starter and it's definitely getting power, it just won't engage shrug

Ignition switch in the steering column maybe? We're kinda stumped at this point.

Does it have an alarm system? Could be that or neutral/clutch switch, depending if ATX or MTX and also the ignition switch, but that I doubt. When you turn the key are you getting any clicking or nothing at all? When you jumped the starter solenoid, it started, right? Sorry for replying so late.

If the starter won't even engage the bendix drive, I would look at the solenoid, But you said that you replaced the starter, which has the solenoid attatched to it.

Test the solenoid to see it is operating properly. Take a test light, and hook one side to a good ground, then put the other side on the solenoid hot lead(direct from battery). Make sure the test light comes on, then put it to the other side, and have your buddy turn the key. The test light should turn on when he tries to start it. If not, it's the solenoid. Another thing to check on the solenoid is the lead from the key switch. I'm not sure which color wire it is, but the solenoid will have a ground, a hot lead(battery direct), hot lead going to the starter, and a lead from the key switch. Once again hook up to a good ground, and put your test light on the key switch lead, have your friend turn the key. If you get no power there, the key switch is bad.

Make sense? I seem to confuse myself sometimes.

If it's not recieving a signal from the igntion wire to the solenoid, it does NOT mean it's the ignition switch/key switch. wink That's why I asked if it clicks upon starting or not, if it does then it's the solenoid as everythings working to give power to it and it's not jumping to turn the starter. If it doesn't then there's more possibility's. thumb Another thing is, did you ground the starter to the correct location? I've had this accident form being tired and heard of another SHOwner doing it resulting in a not start.

hey Huntervf, i had a similar problem in february this year. my battery cables had gone bad and i didnt know it. from corrosion or age or whatever. everything came on inside, just all of a sudden the starter wouldnt turn. i recommend you grab a voltmeter and check them out.

Make sure the terminals are nice and tight, too. You will have spotty starting power if you can actually move the terminals.
