Hey all, just an amusing story. Last weekend I was cruising north out of Morganton NC, on 181 (a long, winding, mountain hwy). I saw four mustangs coming up fast in a temporary passing lane (new gen and last gen). There was only enough room to let two by before I ran out of room. So rather than have the third mustang up my butt, I put the pedal down, and easily caught the lead mustangs. They were going pretty hard in the turns, and I was hanging with them with no trouble. Granted, maybe they weren't hanging it all out. I do realize mustang handles better on paper, but I had enough power and grip that I felt I could have rammed through them. I think turbos pull better than a V8 uphill. They were kind of holding me up at that point, it felt, haha. I let the other 'stangs by on the next straight away.

Just a fun story to make you smile : )

Yea tires make the biggest difference but also in a way having more weight helps stick the corners to some extent think we are more nuetral stance then a mustang.

The point is you had some fun in the bends wish I could have been there as well.

Yep a good tire with H&Rs/coilovers while in sport mode really let the SHO shine for being a land yacht. The problem is when you get the brake generously "warm" they become somewhat no compliant.

Also turbo motors love load. Going up hill puts big load on them and that is where they shine.

Beating a Mustang, well one in particular, is my goal this year. My uncle has a 2013 Boss 302. I was badgering him about running me this year at Christmas. His exact words were,”you don’t stand a chance.” So, making those words his lunch have been my mission ever since.

From a dig if he is on a street tire, he is already dog meat.

Of course he qualified that with, if I don’t miss a Shift. Apparently the MT82 trans is garbage. High rpm lockouts, second to third jams. Shameful really.

You are going to leave him, and he is going to panic. Dog meat.

Sounds like one thing faster than his cars is his excuses. Had this conversation at the track about 30 times last year

I have a 2011 SHO (CAI, plugs, SCT tune, and otherwise unmodified) and a 2015 Mustang GT Premium (CAI, throttle body, and tune - Ford's Power Pack 2), and love them both. Neither has been raced. I have had the Mustang at Summit for HPDE driving (reaching 130 before into the hairpin is scary!) and was planning to take the SHO there this year. (It will be the largest and heaviest car I've seen there so far, so it should be an interesting experience.) Having experienced the Mustang (after the PP2 was added) getting a little too much torque (giving me an "off-track" incident -- grass only, no walls or berms involved!) I am very curious how the 4400 lb, all-wheel drive SHO will go through the turns!

Forgot to include the SCT tune which changed the torque response! Still trying to figure out best other tweaks like shift points and pressure. Open to any recommendations for sporty daily driver use.

Ive never lost to mustang on a highway battle. Id say it was a tie with a modded m5, and this weekend was a 18’ zl1, lost that one but kept up. Old guy was impressed though, he told me he never seen a car next to him still at “that” speed on the highway. He was still pulling though. Downside of awd. Maybe with upgraded turbos and intercooler it would be a different ending

How fast was "that"?

One of those times i wish i would have had the go pro in my car. Next time maybe.
Fastest ive ever been in a car, past my previous record. No gauges left and still flooring it for a while. No clue when ajp turbo tune gives up but didnt feel like it did. Its my play car for now, its always been a very hard driven car. Reason i bought it.

Great question! The few (?) times I punch it on the highway, I don't pay attention to the speedo until I'm coming down from whatever max I hit. When I'm in the SHO, my wife is usually in the passenger seat so I'm a little more "aware" of the speed. I give her credit for not flinching when we reached 100 mph (on a "get away from this flake" moment) ... which I didn't mention until we were back at 72 mph.

Dunno if the SHO that the NASCAR driver was using to impress folks in the ads was modified. But for track work don't count on your brake pads lasting for more than a lap in anger! I autocross with a "street plus" level of pad and never see fade in one lap, but they don't work well for track days even with larger than stock rotors and calipers. Also get your brake fluid flushed first of course.
I used to joke about having the largest / heaviest autocross car, but that was before I looked and found that the C7 vette has the same wheelbase and approximate weight as my Gen II SHO. And now all of the Beemers, Camaros, and Mustangs from recent models outweigh the Gen II as well.

Thanks for the reminder. I have a full set of PowerStops that will get installed shortly on the SHO. Fluid will follow the pads. OE pads on the Mustang lasted through two HPDE outings (four days of driving, sixteen track sessions total). Only felt fade once -- after learning to brake for the track and not like we do on the street.

I haven't paid much attention to SHO timeslips lately. They must be faster than any that run at my tracks. Yes, about any Mustang with a manual is fair game. Their gearing is all wrong and their performance is very much dependent on driver skill.

If you go up against one with the 10 speed auto, you better have a pretty exceptional SHO. Bone stock 10A Mustangs run high 11s in decent air. Tune only and tires put them in mid/low 11s. More bolt-ons or forced induction easily make them 10 second machines or even quicker. With the right tires, 60 foot times are in the 1.5- 1.7 range depending upon mods so they aren't exactly lacking from a dig, either.
