My 1993 3.2 SHO has been leaving me stranded after it warms up. The car runs great and just shuts off without notice. It will crank but not start. Sometimes I make multiple trips in a day with no problems. But when it does stall, it always takes a cool down of 30 to 45 minutes before it will restart. I am familiar with the water pump issue and how it can leak down onto the crankshaft sensor. But the water pump is not leaking and there are no fault codes stored. As of today this has happened to me four times. Each time there has been no faults stored. So far I have tried a new ignition control module and an used ignition coil. The last time it stalled I had time enough to check a few things. Using a fuel pressure gauge, i determined the fuel pressure was good. I checked the spark plugs and noticed that the was no spark to any of them. I also determined that I had 12 volts going into the coil pack. My thoughts are turning towards the PowerTrain Control Module. Does anyone know how to checkout a PCM using a multimeter Or have any ideas on other possible causes. Thanks for your help.

Personally I've never had a water pump destroy a crank sensor, and only had one sensor that threw a code when it puked. But I am 99% sure that it is your crank sensor, because that controls your spark. No signal from the crank sensor = No spark. There are some tests you can do, but I can't find the instructions online anymore. If you can find the pin out to the crank sensor harness, you may be able to check if it's getting a signal with a meter.

Just like TimboSHO said I'm almost positive that's your crank sensor. My car did the exact same thing when the sensor was going, it would shut off randomly then once it cooled down it would work fine. Replacing that sensor solved the shut off problem instantly. I was also losing my tach randomly which I fixed by replacing the camshaft position sensor.

How many miles are on your car? Mine crapped out around 122k

I looked over my maintenance log for this car and it has been about 6 years and 60,000 mile since my last crank sensor replacement. Changing the Crank Sensor is not that difficult or expensive. I thought there would be a fault code for a crank shaft sensor and for that reason I found myself going in a different direction.

I also have had crank sensors die - some with a code and some with no code. Your symptoms are exactly what you get with a bad crank sensor. I would change that first.

Thanks for the help. I'll order a crank sensor and post the results.

Thanks for getting back on track with changing out the Crank Sensor. It was not too difficult to do, but did have to depin and reassemble the large connector and inorder to feed it behind the camshaft aft cover plate. So far, after two days of hard driving, i have had no futher problems.

That's typical. Had to do the same on many occasions.
