Coming from work on Tuesday 5/11/10, SHO started to stumble. Pulled into gas station, popped hood and smoke & fire was already there, then popped trunk and two dudes ran up and sprayed it with fire extinguishers.:fit:
I had to take trolley home. The cable shorted & burned itself into the battery. Tried to push start, but, no start. I hope it fixes with battery and cables. Flames were a couple feet high and I thought for sure the SHO WAS GOING TO BURN.

5/13/10 Put in a new battery & cables... :pray:The SHO LIVES!!! :woo-hoo:

5/14/10 It's running, now to go 4 a drive...well, this morning I removed the battery to reinstall the battery tray. started her up and 300 ft later engine cuts out. I freaked , I was thinking Oh NO, not again, popped the hood and smoking again (ground strap from intake to firewall started to burn) . Luckily, my new trusty Quick release post clamps worked in a jiffy . Seconds later smoke stopped. I was already running late to work @ 4:30Am & it was too dark for a closer look. This morning I returned, (boss gave me the day off, Its my birthday) , the new battery + post was touching the hood. Remember, the battery tray lifted it up an inch or so... I put a dozen stips over post and over spot on hood where they intersect. Like new again!
So, i just have to redo whole battery and cabling, otherwise, I am good.

What is the exzact height of ya'lls battery. ( from the bottom of battery tray,to the top of the post)?

When i bought the '93 ATX it was on fire previosly due to master cylinder recall plug had to swap everything in that area. Booster, master, and i made sure to get the recall done!!!! My 94' the battery almost did the same thing it was hit on that side which pushed the tray up so the battery touched the hood. So i beat the ***** out of it and got it to go back down....

I had put in a twin oil filter relocation kit. the battery went in the trunk. So, the cable was under the kit and chafed, causing a short and burning all the way to the trunk, setting the rear seat and trunk liner on fire. My bad, but upon inspecting all wiring, noticed most cable/wiring insulation is also cracked, brittle and or just needs electrical tape or replacement.

I should've let it burn and collected the insurance money. I will measure my battery tomorrow for you. My car is sitting at the dealership I work at so it will have to be tomorrow.

The insurance company with question you for 45 minutes about why it burned ,were it burned, when it burned. My favorite question was why did it need towed. Glad you got the fire out. I don't ever want to watch my car burn again.

What group size battery did you install? It's supposed to be a group 34, I've had various brands of 34 and they all fit just fine. Most recently an Interstate in the ATX, and a mopar battery I dug up at work that holds a charge alright in the MTX.

I am going to exchange it, shop must have sold me the wrong one. The battery tray is snug & level on fender. i just measured and the top of the post sits 2" 1/2 inches above the foward crossmember above the headlights.

i see their point, you shoulda just manned up and drove it home ...

and people wonder why i treat insurance adjusters like they aren't people. My opening line to the ins copany about a friends RSX-S was "im calling to find out what blind bastard without any brain function wrote my friends estimate"

The thing about owning a cheap a$$ car, is that if anything major happens it is likely totaled. That's why I have two. Not the insurance adjuster's fault you have a 17-year-old Taurus worth at most a couple grand.
