I have a question for the experts with my son's 1993 ATX SHO. Since purchasing the car last april it's had an intermittent problem where it cranks over but does not want to start. This happened maybe 3 times over the summer so it was hard to troubleshoot. If you leave it alone and come back to it a couple of hours later the problem seems to go away. Now that the weather is getting colder it's starting to happen every morning. Eventuallly the car will start if you keep trying long enough and after it starts it runs without issue for the rest of the day or days. Reading the other threads it seems to be a crankshaft or camshaft positioner sensor problem. If I depress the schraeder valve on the fuel rail it has fuel pressure so I am sure it's ignition related. Here is the symptoms:

1. New Battery -Car cranks with no problem but does not fire at all.
2. Check engine light is out during cranking.
3. Tachometer reads about 400 or 500 rpm during cranking.
4. There is fuel pressure in the fuel rail.

Once car starts it runs fine and has no check engine light or any other problems. I was going to replace both crank and cam sensors but I am wondering how difficult is the crank sensor to change. I can see the cable is fished up thru the timing belt cover to the DIS module. Can this be changed without having to pull the harmonic balancer? How involved is changing this and does anyone know of a write up on changing this sensor? I would appreciate any help you guys could throw me. I know I could take it in but my poor kid's in high scool and the cost of paying someone to do this would tap him out. The cars got 230,000 miles on it and the motor runs without issue except for this problem. The shop would probobly charge him more money to replace the sensors than he has in the car. He bought the car for $350.00 and we did an upper 60k on the motor and replaced the intake and valve cover gaskets and plug wires due to oil in the plugwells. 2 new rear calipers and struts later including snapped off pinch bolts, and 2 new front lower control arms the cars rides great and is a awsome car for a high school kid ( I was not this lucky).

I am going to use the link you provided to try to help troubleshoot the problem. The problem is that after the car starts it's impossible to get it to fail again until it feels like it. Thats why I thought I should just bite the bullet and change both sensors. Anyone have an idea about the difficulty of changing the crankshaft position sensor? The camshaft sensor look fairy easy to change. Let me know what needs to be pulled off to access it. Thanks

The crankshaft takes a while- you'll need to remove the accessory belts. I pulled the timing belt on mine, but if you want to save yourself some grief (and exhange it for a different variety) you might be able to remove the sensor with the timing belt still in place?

The "vanes" on the piece that go between the prongs on the sensor have a break big enough to pull the sensor off.

But it's been a long time since I was under a SHO, so I could be remembering this part wrong...

Good luck.
